Boot Pause/Delay 7~8 seconds..??

Hi All,

More and more using my Laptop with Zorin 8 than my PC for day to day stuff
(Have had to install VBox with XP Guest for a couple of things, MS Outlook & Visio Pro)

I have noticed in one of the logs dmesg, I have a 7~8 second pause/gap
I installed Bootchart to try and understand why, but alas my understanding is....errr limited to none..

Here is the pause, I have attached the full dmesg & bootchart. ((don't seem to be able to attach dmesg log file..??))
Code:
[    0.195095] ACPI: SSDT (null) 00119 (v01  PmRef  ApCst 00003000 INTL 20121220)
[    7.277888] ACPI: Interpreter enabled

I was wondering if anybody could see/explain why.???

Many Thanks... Dave

Hi, I counted the time from selecting Zorin at boot time and the 'plymouth' screen takes up that time while Zorin is loading all the stuff needed to run in the background (in much the same way Windows XP Easter Island boot screen does! [If you look at Windows Xp splash screen it does look like an Easter Island face with teeth moving from left to right!])

mmm Not so sure, but I guess a pretty close resemblance,,,

I have found lot's of dmesg log files posted,
Not seen any with a large pause right at the beginning.?
They seem to slowly count up, maybe the odd short pause, here and there.
Would like to figure out/understand why such a long pause...

Cheers... Dave

Hi,

I an effort to track down this ~ 7-8 second delay, I have been trying various options.
One was to modify the GRUB Loader commands to see if ACPI is causing an issue.
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off"

If I try to disable ACPI, just for a test, Zorin fails to load, and it gets stuck in a "BUG" loop.
See the picture below from screen, maybe this one is for Zorin Devs..??

My current "working" GRUB line is:
Code:
"quiet splash acpi_osi=linux acpi_backlight=vendor"

This works fine, it fixes blank screen at Bootup, and added @ 1 hour to my battery life.

Regards - Dave

Do you have 16 Gb RAM installed? I notice your swap file is looking humungous in that screenshot!

Hi Swarfendor437,

Yes 16GB... I got a good(ish) deal on a pretty good Windows 8 Laptop,
then imaged the drive, wiped it, and have been installing distros on it.

I didn't think having 16GB was an issue?
or do you need to do something that I may not have done.?

Hi, your swap area should equal your RAM.

Hi Swarfendor437,

I did set 16.1GB during setup, not sure why it's 15.7GB?
Even so, swaps never been used even with Zorin running & 3 VM's running its used about 9.2GB of memory.

Hi Swarfendor437

16GB, I don't know why I set swap to 16GB,
I understand it you only need it to equal RAM or greater if:
1. You don't have a lot of RAM, so need to use swap
2. If you intend to "Hibernate", so swap needs to hold all RAM

OK, if your swap equals your RAM that should be fine - the minimum is 4 Gb (even if you have less than this); I only found this out after madvinegar posted something about it so I modified my dual-boot/general install guide accordingly! :D

No problem...
once I get more familiar with things, because I have a large amount of RAM
I've been been reading up on putting /tmp in ram, give a little boost "Every little helps" :)

Would like to figure out though what this 7-8sec pause is :?

Usually, boot time is taken up by looking for all the hardware on the machine - have you made any changes hardware wise after initial installation?

Hi,
No changes, same H/W config as at install.
