[SOLVED] USB Wireless adapter

EnnoHem

Thu Mar 20, 2014 8:16:46 pm

Hi everyone,
my name is Enno, and I am new to this forum and to Linux as well. After being pampered for years by windows I thought it s time for some steps into the real world.
So all is well and I have Zorin smoothly running, but now I am trying to make a wireless internet connection work.
I have done some searching and have been typing lots of weird commands into the terminal window, but no succes up to this point.
Anybody out there who can give me some help with this ?

regards , Enno

I have got it working now, using the steps I found in this thread : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1949996
It works perfectly, except that it only works for about one minute :( ,and I have to start it up again etc.
which is pretty annoying, to say the least.
What to do ?

Hi. Can you please post back the following commands after you connect?

lspci -nn | grep 0280
lsusb
sudo lshw -c network
lsmod

Also, have you black listed any module? How do you get it starting up again when it drops?
Any info will be useful.

Hi,thanks for your reply,

I blacklisted RT2800usb and RT2870sta. When the connection drops I click on the desktop the connection icon, disconnect and connect wireless again, then it works for about a minute or so.
This is what I get when I type your commands, I hope its useful..

enno@enno-desktop:~$ lspci -nn | grep 0280

Could it do any harm ( or any good ) if I followed these steps as described by Wolfman ( quote from "WIFI not working ") ?

Wolfman wrote:Hi,

further to MV's post, please do a full update using your network cable per this guide:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

The best terminal command (Ctrl + Alt + t) from the guide is this one which will force an update if any dependencies are missing, restart your PC after updating!:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Let us know if that helps.

Regards Wolfman :D

Try this.
In terminal give
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rt5370sta.conf

A blank document will open. Inside it copy/paste the following line:
Code:
options rt5370sta ips=0 fwlps=0

Save, exit, reboot.

To revert the change, you can just delete the file we created and reboot.

Code:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rt5370sta.conf

What can I say... Chili555 is the grand guru for wireless problems.
His instructions about your card are athe following:

Go here: http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2 Download this to your desktop: RT8070/RT3070/RT3370/RT5370/RT5372USB Right-click it and select Extract Here. Rename the file that's extracted to RT5370. Right-click it and select Extract Here.

RANT: The automagic tools that extract files in Ubuntu work great until they don't and ole Chili has to tapdance. It is far easier than it once was and less easy than I hope it will someday be. END RANT.

Open the resulting folder and go to os > linux and use any text editor to edit config.mk. Please set 'HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y' and 'HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y'. Proofread carefully, save and close the text editor.

Now, a geek's dream; open a terminal and do:
cd Desktop/2011Press Tab and the remainder will fill in. Press Enter. Now do:
sudo su
make
make install
modprobe rt5370sta
exit

I suppose you did follow these instructions, especially the part that says:
Open the resulting folder and go to os > linux and use any text editor to edit config.mk. Please set 'HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y' and 'HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y'. Proofread carefully, save and close the text editor.

There is no mention to blackilist any module (like with the instructions you said you followed).
Maybe you can run the above instructions again carefully and see if that helps?

So I reinstalled the driver twice, first the one from the disc included with the adapter, and then with the downloaded one from the ralink site. But in both cases it cuts out after one minute or less. :(

Last idea in my mind.

Open terminal and run the following command:
Code:
echo 'options rt5370sta nohwcrypt=1' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/rt5370sta.conf

Reboot and see if that helped.

In case you get any problems you can just delete the file we created by running
Code:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rt5370sta.conf

I deleted the blacklisting that I created and that seems to do the trick!
I will test a bit tomorrow and hopefully I can put up a sign that says: [ solved ]
Thanks , Madvinegar ,for your help

I new that there must have been something wrong with that, this is why I told you to follow again the guide of Chili555 - who does not say to blacklist any module.

Lets hope this will do the trick.
