Dell Latitude D620 WiFi Problem

5108696

Mon Mar 31, 2014 9:29:04 pm

Hello again to the ever helpful experts on here,

After completing the install and setup on TWO computers, the third - the wife's is now giving me trouble.

Please refresh my memory on the command I use to reveal the system info needed to evaluate my problem...

I have done a complete overwrite of win xp in this machine but need the broadcom commands...

I tried the commands you had given me for the Vostro 1000 hoping they would work on this Dell Latitude D620, but no luck.

Thank you in advance!

Rick

Hi.
Even if I would prefer to see the ID of the card just to double ckeck, based on the above info, and more specifically on:
-network
description: Network controller
product: BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:0c:00.0
version: 01
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=wl latency=0

I see that you have the bcm4311 card (which needs the b43 driver), while you have loaded the wl driver (which creates conflict).
So we need to uninstall the wl driver, and then install the firmware for b43.

Plug an ethernet cable to get internet, open terminal and run the following commands.
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe b43

Wait for 5 seconds and then see if your wireless is working.
A reboot may be required.

After completing your suggestion, it still had no wifi connectivity....

I did notice that after entering each command- which I did line by line due to it appearing to be separate commands, that it never displayed any verbage indicating it was done. After 30 or so minutes, I restarted the computer which yielded no wifi connection.

On another note, after doing some tweaking of the preferences last night, I have discovered that after initiating the 'shut down' procedure, it appears to shut down, but the screen goes to a solid light blue background.

Thank you in advance for your expert help!

OK,

After blowing the first attempt to program the code Madvinegar provided, I re-entered it as a single entry, however no magic outcome like with the first machine.

Although I don't understand your comment to "see the ID of the card", or the machine's feedback suggesting I perform something as a ''super user'', I have pulled the latest system info for posting. If there is something else I can provide, PLEASE give detailed instructions and I will comply.

Thank you again.

Hi, If you entered the code madvinegar gave you you might have made some errors - the easiest way to enter the code is to have your browser open alongside a Terminal window - best to have each side by side which will mean reducing the size of the Browser window to prevent jumping from one window to the other when you make the other active.

Try to use your mouse and copy and paste the first line of code, press enter, then repeat each step.

Keep us posted! :D

I am happy to proclaim that I am sending this reply via WIFI!

Thank you both. I'm not sure how, but somehow when I restarted it for the multiple'th time, it magically appeared on the screen. It then took me several more times for it to actually select one of the wireless networks displayed and bring up the login window.

Hopefully this works consistently so I can get my wife back in business with her Pintrest obsession.

I am having an occasional problem with the google chrome window freaking out. When it happens, the whole screen goes crazy, can be scrolled up / down with the mouse, and when you Alt+Tab, it stops during the time the alternate programs window is visible.

The only way I can stop it is a hard shutdown.

Thank you,

Rick

Does this happen only with chrome? What happens if you use firefox?

Not sure, I don't think Firefox is installed.

I will check though.
