[SOLVED]Virtualbox Upgrade & Guest Additions "Updated"

Wirezfree

Sun Apr 06, 2014 8:32:24 pm

Hi,

Zorin S/W manager is offering an upgrade of Vitualbox.
I realise it will upgrade the Host application,
When I then open the Guests will upgrade them also?
or will I need to do Guest Additions un-install and re-install.?
Just want to make sure I don't break anything..??

Thanks.. David

Hi David,

you normally can only update as administrator, a normal guest account won't let you update unless you have set the permissions correctly, see "Adding other user accounts:" here:

Hi,

Swarfendor is correct,
Sorry I should have said "Guest OS".

Thanks Wolfman,
No problem, I should have been more precise.

I have read that one(3 or 4 times),
It's even more confusing when you get to the common issue section...
It's not clear(to me at least) if they are talking about Host OS or Guest OS...
One of the reasons for my post, clarity.

Thanks... David

Hi Wolfman,

Thanks... Yes that is the Full Manual.
But the Upgrade of Host & Guest(VM) is still "Grey"
Guest additions should be backwards compatible.
I will just try it, nothing to loose.

Thanks - David

Hi Wolfman,
Will do... I'm now through my experimental/testing stage.
I'm 1st going to do a new clean/fresh install of Zorin, apply all my updates/tweaks/config etc..
Then a new install of the latest Virtualbox, and hopefully move my VM's back, and update the Guest editions.
Will post back...

Hello All,

Quick update on my Virtualbox update experience:

1. Update Virtualbox from 4.3.8 to 4.3.10, installed all O.K

2. During the Virtualbox update it recognised that the Virtualbox "Extensions" needed an update.
Followed the prompts to download and install an updated version, all O.K
Note this is the "Extensions" pack "NOT" the Guest Additions, they are installed in the VM.

Linux Guest:
Open a "Linux Guest", received a notification about Guest Additions revision.
Open the "Devices Menu" in the "Guest" and selected "Insert Guest Additions CD Image"
Depending on your settings it will:
a) "Auto Run" and the update/install will start, or
b) You will need to open a terminal, and navigate to "GuestAdditionsISO" mounted in "/Media"
and then exectue as sudo the GuestAdditionsLinux.run file.
Then the Guest Additions are updated, and a re-boot is required

Windows Guest:
Open a "Windows Guest" ~ NO notification of update observed.
Open the "Devices Menu" in the "Guest" and selected "Insert Guest Additions CD Image"
Open "My Computer" and a virtual "GuestAdditions CD" is shown, Double Click it.
The Guest Additions update/install is started, then a re-boot is required.

You can check the "Guest Additions" have updated to same revision by:
Open "Machine" Menu, Select "Session Information" you will see "Guest Additions" revision, now at 4.3.10
