Dell Latitue C640 CPU running 100%

Anonymous Twit

Sat Apr 12, 2014 9:13:28 pm

I will apologize for being a twit first and foremost.

I decided to try out Zorin OS and get rid of Windows XP Pro as MS is no longer supporting it. someone told me that Zorin OS is supposed to be user friendly and allows that old XP look and feel. Boy, was I wrong. I found so many bugs I am surprised it was ever released.

First off, I have a Dell Latitue C640, Pentium 4, 1.8ghz with 1gb DDR2, ATI Mobile
I downloaded and installed Zorin OS 8 Gaming 32-bit. since I saw that support ended for 6-7 and that Gaming was now free. Just to see what kind of games are included.

Machine failed to shut down after installation completed.

I could not login as administrator. Figured this out and was able to fix this issue with an update from Advanced options for Zorin recovery mode. dpkg to repair broken packages.

Clock not showing up in lower right corner on task bar. (Workaround which has to be done every time I log on, Open Universal Access, under seeing, turn on High Contrast, let it change, Then turn off High Contrast. and it is now displaying correctly.)

Every other Boot the system hangs after selecting Zorin from the boot prompt and gets a Black Box.

Date/time Settings greyed out, a reboot appeared to fix this.

Zorin OS 8 has experienced an internal error. Executable Path /user/bin/compiz

Updates are not very visible nor easy to find from the graphical user interface.... Software updates does not appear to update system. I had to do a lot of clicking around and found under system Settings > Details and Install Updates button.

Shutdown Button hides behind task bar. good thing I was able to get the user name shutdown open showing on right side of task bar.

Reboot option always appears to hang at the Zorin Boot prompt after selecting Zorin then gets a black Box.

Run Test from System Testing, left everything checked. Could not get past the Suspend Resume even though it appeared to work the buttons greyed out and I could not get past that test after it auto resumed.

Can not find wireless with my Broadcom.
Can not find something like a device manager.
My DVDRom shows up as a Floppy Drive.
Zorin does not appear to ID my Video Card correctly.

With everything updated my CPU is still running maxed out 100% at desktop and I would like to get this issue fixed first and foremost. even if I fix another issue I can not have my CPU running 100% all the time. Anything I should do before I try another system?

Hi,

you appear to have a mess on your hands, try a forced update which will force any missing dependencies to install and restart once done, use the following terminal command (Ctrl + Alt + t):

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

See the post install guide near the bottom for info about resetting AWN panel if necessary:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2054

See the last section of the AWN (Avant) info about the clock panel!.

Let us know how you get on. :D

Even though these might not be related to the CPU 100% issue it might be tied in. Let me know if I need more terminal listing.

Not sure what you meant to do with AWN Panel so I just did the one thing about the clock:
“If your clock is not showing correctly in the bottom right of the AWN panel, open Tweak Tool > Theme > Gtk+ Keybinding Theme and change it to "Emacs””:
and rebooted, it did not fix the problem.

BTW, The tweak Tool location is “System Tools > Preferences > Tweak Tool

so I tried the following with result that looks like it failed.
~$ sudo apt-get purge avant-window-manager && sudo apt-get install avant-window-manager

Ok, something I have noticed about the CPU getting to 100%. When System Monitor is Open showing Resources CPU spikes to 100% and stays there until... I click to view Processes and see compiz is extremely high usage of CPU and drops... when I view Resources again I see the CPU had dropped to around 50% and fluncuates. when I go back to Resources it spikes to 100% solid...

I return to processes and watch the CPU % of each process... when I open a window or click on Zorin Menu Compiz spikes to really high CPU%.

compiz & gnome-system-monitor are both using from 15%-70% with compiz getting the highest Percentage.

Hi,

open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Addtional Drivers and see if there are any available drivers (there should be for your model!) for your graphics card, it may be related to that too!.

Restart after installing any drivers on offer, always select the "Recommended" drivers if offered!. Do another update just to be on the safe side!.

You could remove Compiz but will lose a lot of functionality from desktop effects?. This however might solve the resources problem, you could also switch to Zorin Lite 8 which would be more gentle on your PC!.

Let us know how you get on. :D

The following linked post is marked Resolved and does not resolve my issue:
[RESOLVED] Dell Demension 4550 & Zorin slow
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6805

Where putting a checkbox In the, Zorin Menu > System Tools > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager > Utility > Workarounds > Don't wait for video sync:

did not solve compiz from spiking my CPU to 100%. System still runs slow when opening / closing windows or Zorin Menu. Though that post uses an NIVIDA graphics rather than ATI Radeon.

I have unchecked all "Effects" in the CompizConfig Settings Manager

I want to note these changes in “CompizConfig Settings Manager” are not global, they are per user.

I have inadvertly found a workaround for the Time/clock /user not showing up issue on the task bar on right side, but this causes the title bar to disappear and can not resize windows. Uncheck the Zorin Menu > System Tools > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager > Effects > Enable Windows Decoration

However while changing this setting several times, I got another Zorin OS 8 internal error with compiz. I noticed this closes the date/time/user on the right side of the task bar. As a result of this the Zorin Menu is now on top of the task bar like it is supposed to be allowing me to click the shut down button.

I would like to also note boot up time to login prompt is 55 seconds. Once logged in it takes another 60 seconds to get Desktop. This is way too slow.

Loading Saved Draft on this forums does not load my saved Draft =\ Also no submit buttons are visible in Load Draft.

Let me know if you want me to submit any photos..

I am, though you should tell new users the full path to:
Zorin Menu > System Tools > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager
Also should note that the "settings" is on title bar.
I had to search for it.

Well Bad news is that It only finds Broadcom BCM4301 and when I attempt to apply changes to install driver it appears to hang. The orange bar is not progressing.

Hi AT,

please wait 10 mins and I will write a How-To on how to manually install the ATI/AMD drivers!.

I got an Update information popup that appears to be for flashplugin-installer.
Update Information - flashplugin-installer.JPG

When I click "Run this action now" I get an "Authenticate" popup with a terminal under it.
Update Information - flashplugin-installer - Authenitcate.JPG

When I type in password for Admin user the terminal and authenticate windows close and the Information Available Update information remains with "Run this action now" button. When click it just repeats the above... This appears to be stuck in a loop.

Hi,

please see the ATI/AMD driver install guide:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6951

Read the links posted in the guide carefully!.

If you update using the terminal or Synaptic, the flashplayer package should update.

Gotta go now for a few hours!. Good luck!. :D

Well its way past my bed time 4:00 am...
Thats a lot of reading...
It appears that fglrx current version does not support a non-HD Radeon... I would have to dig through ATI's website for the older drivers to get the correct proprietary driver.
Otherwise, ubuntu's open source driver does support my Video with 3d support.
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV200/M7 [Mobility Radeon 7500]

Wolfman, You need to clarify your Post since ATI Radeon reuse the numbering sequence between non-HD Radeon and HD Radeon Video cards.
Example My Card is a Radeon 7500 not a Radeon HD 7500.

Also, ATI's website says I have to make sure other packages are installed to use their driver without saying how to do this...

Under system settings > details > it appears that Zorin installed an software 3d driver "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits)". This could very well be an issue.

I am surprised that Linux can not correctly install drivers even when it can correctly ID them as posted from lspci.

Good night. I am sleeping in.

Hi,

I did put a warning on the how-to:

"This may or may not work depending on your graphics chip, please read the following pages"

Did you do a disk install of Zorin and did you follow this advice?:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4771

Did you read points 1.1 & 2 here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD

Maybe the Lite version of Zorin might work better on your rig?.

I have written more warnings on the how-to to make people more aware!.

Here is some information concerning the Video... I feel defeated. And do not know why it is not installing the 3d drivers for my Video card even though the open source specifically shows my card is fully supported. Many Links to ATI/AMD's website are broken and I can not search for older drivers for my card.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Radeo ... _Supported

Now XOrg is using CPU along with compiz and gnome-system-monitor.

Hi AT,

once last glimmer of hope I can give you is this thread here:

http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17948

I am not an expert in graphic card problems sorry, other than the above; all I can suggest is you try a 32 bit version of Zorin 8 or the Zorin Lite version!.

You tried running "dpkg" in recovery?, you tried running the force update command installing and removing the drivers. Often a new fresh install is the quickest fix for such problems!. :(

Let us know what you want to do and once again, sorry that I cannot help you further!. :(

Wolfman, Thank you for your time. I am surprised you are the only one responding to issues on this forum.

I as mentioned in the first post I am using Zorin 8 Gaming 32-bit. My understandings of differences between "lite" and "gaming" would be less applications and games, basically barebones. It would still be the same Core, GUI and repositories.

Yes, I have done the forced commands you posted. I even posted the command I typed and its results.

I am going to try Linux Mint Cinnamon, Kubuntu and/or Lubuntu. If none of these work I will change to a completely different Distro.

Hi AT,

I hope you get it sorted, whether you use Zorin Os or not, you are still welcome on the forum, what is important is that you have a fully working PC!.

Even though I have a 64 bit PC, I use 32 bit systems as I find them better, just a personal preference of mine!.

I tried Linux Mint but find it lacks a lot now as they have moved to Debian instead of Ubuntu, a good OS is Pinguy OS, lots of things come pre-installed!. :D

For more ideas, look here:

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!.:D

Just needs to be a basic system. I choose the Zorin 8 Gaming just to see what games are available for linux and to view the Desktop options.

This Laptop is over a decade old and still runs strong even though it runs hot.

I wonder if someone can make a Windows XP repository to continue to get updates.

Hi AT,

you can still run XP in a virtual DE!. You might want to search for more info but here are the basics:

Hi AT, I have been 'absent' having had a heavy week of modifying papers for students who cannot see well or not at all (e.g., one maths paper can take up to 12 hours preparation time! So I have been absent for a bit of respite so-to-speak.

Before namecalling GNU/Linux of any distro, first look at where the problem lies - the hardware vendors and somewhere on here it was posted that they were not going to support older graphics cards (AMD). Gallium 0.4 is the same driver that this rig had and the standard nouveau drivers provided were fine - fglrx just screwed everything up. I also recently downloaded the Gaming edition and well, compared to LX Gamers or Ultimate Gamers a bit disappointing.

Getting back on track I might suggest you try Zorin Lite as Wolfman has suggested, and failing that you should take a look at Trisquel (http://trisquel.info) or LXLE (http://lxle.net). If compiz is causing issues I would just untick everything in the Compiz setting manager (Menu | System Tools | Preferences | Compiz Config Settings Manager), starting with 'Animations' - but DON'T uncheck window decorations!:

As you have a notebook Dell I would think that the Compiz thing might be the main issue. You could also try removing and reinstalling the AWN panel as Wolfman has advised other users to see if that clears up the clock issue:

Open a Terminal (Ctrl+ Alt+ T or Menu | Accessories | Terminal) and enter:

Code:
sudo apt-get purge avant-window-navigator && sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

Then update your machine, reboot and see if it has cured it - otherwise, go with the alternatives suggested! :D
