[SOLVED] placed a script into init.d and now can't boot

Hi all

I have a major problem. I wanted to run a rsync command when the computer is told to shutdown so I found this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=990796

Not sure what happened but now I can't get my computer to do anything. When I say anything I mean: I get the Toshiba BIOS logo and then a blank screen. The blank screen appears instead of the pre boot screen (I think it is called grub or something like that).

I put Zorin 8 onto a USB and I told the computer to look for the USB before the HDD but I still get a blank screen. I press F12 which should bring up a list of boot up options but I just get a blank screen.

Not sure what has happened but I would like any tips on how to solve this. At the moment I am thinking, may be a new HDD.

The rsync command looked similar to:
rsync -ave ssh /home/usr/Documents /mnt/NASdrive1/usr

Don't think the rsync would cause this, but may be placing it in the init.d like the about post suggests may be the problem. Any bright ideas?

Many Thanks

PS I am still smiling. This is all about learning my OS.

Hi,

did you set it up to boot from something on the USB stick?, if you did, it will search for the USB stick first before it does anything!, you can try a BIOS reset to fault defaults and I would try booting the Live CD and open a terminal and type the following command:

Code:
sudo update-grub

Then reboot and see if everything is back the way it was!.

You might need to use "Boot Repair":

http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/

Let us know how you get on!.

Hi Wolfman, I am replying within your quote but my replies will be in blue

did you set it up to boot from something on the USB stick?, I first of all tried to put a script into my init.d and then did a reboot. The system failed to boot, so I then tried to but from a USB stick and still nothing. I now have reset manufacturers setting in BIOS and I still get nothing. So in short to answer your question: No, not initially if you did, it will search for the USB stick first before it does anything!, you can try a BIOS reset to fault defaults and I would try booting the Live CD and open a terminal and type the following command: I can not get a command promt

Code:
sudo update-grub

Then reboot and see if everything is back the way it was!.

You might need to use "Boot Repair":

I sure will let you know if I ever recover from this

I have even taken the battery out and left the computer unpluged over night. It didn't make a difference, I didn't think it would but I had to try.

I am thinking  , LOL this could be as dangerous as my last thought about real time backup LOL.

I can not boot at all on my Tosh laptop.

So if I buy an external SATA enclosure and put my Tosh HDD into it, I should be able to view the contents of the drive on my Dell laptop (correct me if I am wrong). If I can do that, would I be able to try and repair Grub (for Tosh HDD) from there or would it repair my Dell Grub?

Hi Wolfgang02,

just taking the battery out won't do much, you would need to reset the "Master Jumper" for it to have any effect on resetting your MB!.

See resetting the jumper here:

http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS

What do you mean, you don't see a cursor in the live CD, is the little square cursor not blinking at all?, you did open a terminal didn't you?.

Let me know what happens please. :D

I am going to try and reset the MB tonight and I will let you know how that goes.

Lets hope reset the MB will do the trick.

Hi Wolfram,

You are a superstar. I am so, so happy to say that the MB reset has worked. Grub is back and so is Zorin. :)

A massive, massive thank you. In fact no thank you in world would explain how happy I am right now.

I am going to mark this as solved, because you, Wolfman, have solved it. You should be called Mr. Wolfman Will Fix It.
