Hello everyone!

I have installed Zorin 8 on my Sony Viao VGN-AR590E

lspci lists the following:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 044e:300d Alps Electric Co., Ltd Bluetooth Controller (ALPS/UGPZ6)
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC6 [R5U870]
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Cheese started from the terminal gives this outpuit.

paul@paul-VGN-AR590E:/dev$ cheese

Am I needing to do something with the 'libunity-gtk-module.so'?

Hi,

open a terminal with Ctrl + Alt + t and paste the following command and then restart your PC and see if the problem is still there:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

The first command will update your package list, the second command will force update the packages and any missing dependencies ; if there are new versions available.

Let us know what happens. :D

Thanks for your reply Wolfman,

I ran the
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f
reports the following:

Fetched 1,753 kB in 8s (201 kB/s)

A few hours ago I had run a
Code:
sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade
on the pc so no updates reported there.

I took a few snapshots of the repository setup from inside synaptic.

Hi,

open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Other Software and check that the "Canonical" boxes are ticked then reload and try updating again!.

Thank you for your help!

The link you provided works excellently! 'Swarfvendor437' I will make certain to note the Sony-Viao-VGN-AR590E webcam works just fine. on the link you provided. Thank you.

I had to manually untick the 'elementary ppa' in order to perform a sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade after installing the script for the Webcam.

Could you please take a look at my current /etc/apt/sources.list file? I took 2 screenshots 1 in terminal 1 in synaptic. Note the unmarked 'elementary ppa on line 58' because synaptic would not load nor could I update the system via terminal.

Thank you for your help and caring, :o

I tried adding a comment to the link you so kindly gave 'no avail' -----> http://technology-shettyprasad.blogspot ... buntu.html

Please if you so kindly have the time to inform them that it does work with a Sony-Viao-VGN-AR5905E laptop computer.

Hi,

assuming you are trying to use the PPA you added, you must put a tick in the "Elementary PPA" boxes, close the Software sources windows and then click on "Reload > Mark All Updates > Apply" and this should update the system fully including the new PPA.

To force an update, you can use the following terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) command:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Hi Wolfman, thanks for stepping in at the breach! I am getting tired again! :D

To panorain, you could always e-mail the author - I can't comment either! :D

[Unsolved]

You have given better help than the other forums.

I would like to stay with this operating system and ask questions if you do not mind.

Thank you for the help with the webcam.

You were able to help with the webcam while larger places cannot.

I have many more questions to ask but this is not the time.

Thank you for helping me.

Please continue to help people. So much is needed the ones who care are good in spirit.

Nothing more nothing less

Hi,

take a look at the update guide, there might be something you missed and you can check the software sources settings here:

Hi panorain, I noticed [unsolved] in a previous post - is this still the issue?

It looks like I have problems when I enable the 'educational .ppa binary'. When I go into /etc/apt/sources.list and look at line #51 that is what comes up. I guess I messed it up somehow. Any suggestions?

Thank for all your help so far.

OK, take a look here - you need to scroll down for the answer - whilst it is a different line, different ppa the way to resolve is the same:
