[MOVED] Noob to Zorin and Linux

ShaunG

Sat Apr 19, 2014 7:23:53 pm

I have just installed Zorin... and today is my first day with Linux. It is something I have wanted to do, and finally accomplished... This means I am on a learning curve... how do I install applications (such as .run) and how do I install from .tar.bz2 files, and how do I get applications to run, and more than that... how do I create launchers... please keep in mind today is my first day with Linux after using windows.

Hi ShaunG, and welcome to Zorin! :D

To install an application using '.run' you will need to open a Terminal (Menu | Accessories | Terminal) and when you get there you will need to navigate to Downloads (for some strange reason default folder normally chosen is Documents but you don't have to put it there, you can choose where you put your downloads but for '.run' files you need to remember exactly where you put them as you are going to have to navigate to the folder where they are in order to get it to '.run'

So for this example you have downloaded 'application.run' - navigate to the downloads folder in the terminal by entering:

Code:
cd Downloads
(cd = change directory) and press the Enter key.

then enter:

Code:
chmod +x appplication
press the enter key.

Now enter

Code:
./application.run
and press enter again and the installer should run.

For .tar.bz2 files I would extract these using the 'Archive Manager' and re-archive them as '.tar.gz' and install 'alien':

Code:
sudo apt-get install alien

then navigate in the terminal to where the tar.gz file is and enter:

Code:
sudo alien application.tar.gz

This converts the compressed archive into a '.deb' file which can then be installed using the Software centre or Gdebi Package Installer.

To create a launcher, first create a desktop shortcut - right-click the item in the menu and select 'Create Desktop shortcut' - launc the application from there and an icon will appear on the panel at the bottom - right-click the icon on the panel and select 'pin application'.

Enjoy! :D

sigh..... I am feeling much like a fish out of water... it says I must run it as root... how do I get to be in root? Kinda feeling like running back to my old familiar.

I tried to pin, but it is not showing me that option, and when it has launched, it says create custom launcher.... so again this is new language for me.

Have you logged in as Guest? There is an issue at first install where login drops to guest - use your up and down cursor keys to get your username up. To run as root normally 'sudo' is enough - for complete 'root' (administrator) privileges you would open a terminal and enter 'gksudo nautilus'. If the command is not showing, say it is 'firefox' you would enter in the 'command' box of the launcher 'firefox %u' - this is general rule-of-thumb - but not had this issue myself - unless it is some bizarre app? :D

I am trying to install nvidia geforce 770m drivers into zorin, and that downloaded as NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.67.run and this needed to be run as root.

The alien conversion did not work well, the software centre did not launch the application but the .deb file had a red cross on it.

Hi,

open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt +t) and paste the following command:

Code:
lspci

then copy and paste all the results here so we can see what graphics card you have.

Check out this thread first and the part about installing drivers:

Sorry, my bad, you need to install Gdebi Package Installer! Open a terminal and enter:
'Se
Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi

After it has installed, go to the newly created package with a red circle with white cross on it and right-click it and select 'open with other application...' and choose 'Gdebi' - it will check whether all dependencies are satisfied before you can click on the 'Install button'

Having read Gizmuntu's postings elsewhere today, you would be better downloading the 304 drivers by going to the 'Software Updater' in Menu | System Tools | Administration and click on the 'Settings' button, then on the 'Addtiional Drivers' tab, and wait for it to populate from the server - go for 304 but nothing later as it can cause major issues! :D

Hi Shaun,

you have the Nvidia card "VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106M [GeForce GTX 770M] (rev a1)" and can install the 331 driver version according to this page:

64 Bit:

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 5019/en-us

32 Bit:

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 5018/en-us

(It seems that there is no diffrence between 32 and 64 Bit!, see below for full supported cards list)

Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and paste the following command, restart your PC after installing the drivers and run an update just in case:

Code:
sudo apt.get install nvidia-331

With nvidia, everything blue (I'm not that big a fanboi of blue that it extends to my video watching! ):

easy fix, start a flash vid and then expand to fullscreen and right click > "Settings" and take out "Enable Hardware Acceleration" done!. :D

Nah, screwed up the Z boot screen too - can't believe I am saying that but preferable to the Lubuntu ldm type boot splash - and Gun Metal now works in Wine too! ;)
