Is there a way to give windows a border or edge so that a separation can be seen with superimposed windows?

Hi,

try installing "gnome-color-manager", via a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t):

Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome-color-manager

Thanks to you both for your replies and ideas. I have decided to go with xp royale in gnome-look.com as being the nearest to what I need. Unfortunately, being a newbie in Zorin and Linux, I am having trouble in extracting the theme/program into Zorin. I really do need guidance once again as everything I have tried failed to work. Put it down to my advanced age. So if you can help that would be great.

Can you post a link to the theme? :D

Hi,

open your home folder and create a new folder with the name ".themes", after you extract your downloaded theme, copy and past it into the new folder, the folder will be hidden when you open home, press "Ctrl + h" and then you will see the hidden folders, use Tweak Tool to change the themes!.

You can also add the PPA's from here:

Following Wolfman's instructions I transfered two newly downloaded themes 'borderlinegtk3.tar.gz' and 'XPRoyale.tar.gz' into the new .themes folder. So far so good. I then right clicked the first one to find Unity Tweak tool and duly clicked on it. It showed the spinning symbol to show it had got the message - and then nothing further happened. No change to the theme in use at all. I tried again with the second downloaded theme same result. Am I missing something significant here?

Hi,

you shouldn't be using Unity Tweak Tool; but Gnome Tweak Tool (AKA Advanced Settings!)(AKA2 Tweak Tool)!.

You can also try Ubuntu Tweak:

http://ubuntu-tweak.com/

Download and install with Gdebi!.

A search shows that Gnome Tweak Tool is installed but when I apply search all the files of that name have a red cross on them presumable denoting a disabled state. The ubuntu tweak shows the two themes have already been installed twice each. I think I need to uninstall a few things and start again. Would you agree?

Try updating the system first - it may suggest 'autoremove' of packages after you have done that:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f
- the '-f' to force necessary updates.

There is also a very good utility for duplicate file removal:

Well, I have managed to find and use the tweak tool! So far the only changes I have been able to make are to the desktop icons which now look fine. The downloaded theme was available in the tweak menu only in the ikon theme choices. I have also used the duplicate file finder and deleted a lot of stuff. So far so good.

Hi,

the red x's denote root access only!.

To make yourself root should you want to, open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and paste the following command:

Code:
gksudo nautilus

Your home folder will open as root, as long as you leave it open (there is a time limit I believe!), you can do things as root, be careful what you do, you can destroy your system if you delete the wrong file(s)!. :D
