indicator3 applet replacement?

Howdy Y'all,

I am trying to setup Zorin OS for my mom. I would like it to be as windows like as possible. The last thing I have to do is get the indicator3 applet to look more like the windows system tray.

Here is what I am trying to do:

1. Remove the messaging folder icon.
2. Remove the language selection icon.

From what I can tell, I can't remove those from indicator3. I can't find a *messaging.so file to rename.

Is there an alternative to indicator3 that I could use? I guess I could get individual applets, but I can't seem to find any and get them to show up as available to add.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

if you are using Zorin 6, you can use this terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) command to install the AWN meta applets package:

sudo apt-get install awn-applets-all

I don't know offhand which you can use, take a look at the post install guide and this section for more info about Avant Window Navigator: "More info about the AWN panel (Avant Window Manger)"

If you are using Zorin 8, you can download single packages from here (all.deb files if you can please!) and install them with "Gdebi":

I'm at work now but I somehow managed to get rid of that indicator 3 applet and got back a nice interface - you can see it here while I think of it:

That 'no entry' sign is the nm applet when I am connected using my ethernet and powerline adapter - seems more stable than my Netgear WNDA 3100 dongle - I don't think it likes the new Asus Router!

I also had some issues and got rid of a PPA and somehow the 'digital clock' appeared back in synaptic package manager, so on the right of the panel is:
CPU speed applet, shiny switcher, notification area, Volume Control, Digital Clock (with calendar), Logout, Power Off, Show Desktop.
