Printer driver problem

bozdo

Sun May 18, 2014 2:09:15 pm

This is my very first Linux installement. So far I'm liking it, I want my parents to use this OS but I have a problem with my printer, a Lexmark x2500. There don't seem to be any drivers, I then tried installing driver for x2600, the latest driver version of Ubuntu is 10.10

Thanks!

Hi,

try downloading this file, I cannot say whether or not it will work though!:

http://downloads.lexmark.com/downloads/ ... deb.sh.zip

Follow these instructions:

A. RUNNING THE GUI INSTALLER SCRIPT IN THE TERMINAL

Open up your favorite terminal (xterm, konsole, gnome-terminal, etc)
Extract the zip file
Use the following command to install the driver
#./lexmark-inkjet-[xx]-driver-[x.x.x]..i386.deb.sh
Follow the instruction in the installation screen.

B. RUNNING THE GUI INSTALLER SCRIPT

Do not attach the printer via USB to the Linux machine.
Extract the zip file.
lexmark-inkjet-[xx]-driver-[x.x.x].i386.deb.sh
Run the installer script file by double-clicking on the file icon and then click the "Run in Terminal" button or run the script file via command-line.
Follow the instructions in the installer screen.

I hope it helps but use this at your own risk as these are older drivers!.

I've followed the instructions...
For A. see first screenshot what I get, I've tried variation, like not using these " [ ] " or inserting numbers instead of " x.x "
As for B. I double-click the extracted file and see the screenshot on what I get, continuous loading. I did this before today, it actually showed loading process and when it was done it said that it could not open it.

Hi,

install the package "nautilus-open-terminal" and then restart your PC.

Once restarted, right click the package and "Open in Terminal" and see if you can install it that way!.

Terminal command to install package is below:

Code:
sudo apt-get install nautilus-open-terminal

From your screenshots I can see you are running Zorin as a Virtual Machine as opposed to a full install - perhaps that is part of the issue.

This is how to install '.sh' files:

I think I've installed the nautilus terminal. Restarted but there is no option to open with that terminal. Also I can't find it anywhere...

Tried Swarfendor's suggestion and this is what I got

Sorry! :( ,

I should have been a little more precise, click on the package you want to install and then click the cogwheel top right in Nautilus and then open in terminal:

I click on open in terminal, but nothing happens, it just opens a window of the terminal that's all

Hi,

are you clicking on the package first and has it been extracted?.

bozdo

Yes, the package was extracted and selected.

Hi,

once the terminal has opened, drag the file you want to run into the terminal and press enter, it should run then!. :D

Hi,

what is your system ?, 32 or 64 bit and what is the package you are trying to install?.

I have never used VM so I don't know what problems might arise from trying to install single packages in a VM OS!.

bozdo

Tue May 20, 2014 5:27:26 pm

64bit. I've installed the 64bit version of Zorin. I'm trying to install the driver package for lexmark.

Wolfman

Tue May 20, 2014 5:41:55 pm

Hi,

the package you have is for 32 bit only, try reading this and see if it helps:

bozdo

I followed the instructions but no luck.
I've downloaded the driver for Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 and Debian 6.0, they seem to be the same driver, same size. Tried the same with both of these drivers

OK, are you using VM Ware or Virtual Box? Are you running it inside GNU/Linux installation or Windows installation?

bozdo

Tue May 20, 2014 8:14:35 pm

I'm using VM Ware. I have Win 7

Also I've tried using the command sudo su and it came up with this:
"Warning:No installer for x86 64 found, defaulting to x86...
Error opening terminal: xtrem"

How can I use the nautilus terminal, it was installed but I can't find it anywhere

Swarfendor437

Tue May 20, 2014 8:27:45 pm

You open a terminal (Ctrl+ Alt+ T) and enter:

Code:
gksudo nautilus

which will give you root privileges.

I have only ever used VM Player once when it shipped with Sabayon. I prefer Virtual Box and suggest you give Virtual Box a try and be sure that 'passthrough' is enabled so that the VM can talk to the host and vice versa to get a printer connection! ;)

bozdo

Tue May 20, 2014 8:40:56 pm

Zorin while on VM Ware can detect usb connections, it read my stick.

Anyway I tried that command, it mentions something about: "libunity-gtk-module.so" Then a window pops up where I have to enter my password, I do it and then Folder Explorer pops up and just Home is visible.

Swarfendor437

Tue May 20, 2014 9:08:06 pm

Well all I can think of is Zorin doesn't like VM Ware or there is a part of the 'unity' element of Ubuntu that does not want to play. I much prefer to run GNU/Linux as a proper installation to the Hard Drive - sorry I can't advise further. :D

Hi,

all I can suggest now is to install the package "gnome", this will install a lot of packages you don't need but might help steady your system!.

Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome

Choose "LDM" when asked during the package install!.

Apart from dragging the package into the terminal; I really don't have any other ideas as I don't do VM sorry!.

bozdo

Wed May 21, 2014 2:08:21 pm

Didn't work
I better test another OS

Hi,

a thought occured to me, if you running this as a "Guest session", it won't allow you to do anything administrative and even if you change to a different distro, it won't work unless you login as "Root" I would think?.

bozdo

Thu May 22, 2014 6:57:04 am

I've tried following these instructions http://archbird.blogspot.co.nz/2012/04/ ... xmark.html
I got to the "gedit control" part where I cut the description and then pasted it right where it belonged. Just like in the example. Then I Saved and quit. I had the terminal open and continued to type the commands and this is what I got:

Hi bozdo,

it doesn't seem to like the driver package for whatever reason?.

Did you do all it said on that website link?, it talks about renaming parts of the file and you would need to follow all that is written to the letter!.

Are you loged in a "Guest" session?. Like I said before; I don't use VM so cannot really tell ayou what to do next!.

bozdo

Thu May 22, 2014 1:17:51 pm

I managed to install it.
What now?

I get this.
Screenshot (246).png

After I've clicked Foward I chose lexmark and the model name, x2600
Eventually I get here. I'm trying to use the Simple Scan feauture. I don't have any ink so I can't print a test page to see if it actually works, scanning is the priority here.

bozdo

Fri May 23, 2014 8:45:36 pm

I've found some new instructions.
I've skipped step 4 as it wasn't possible to run that .sh file
So now I'm at step 6, trying to add the printer with the CUPS interface. How do I do this, where is it?

Hi,

did you do the editing as suggested in step 5?.

Really all I can only suggest you take a look here as it it is above my head to be honest and I would be guessing to say the least!:

Yes I did, though when I typed the second command, gedit opened and it was blank, nothing to edit.

bozdo

Sat May 24, 2014 7:45:21 am

CUPS was already installed, I read the link that you posted, it seems very confusing and off I think.
I followed these instructions sort of: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/194
Why sort of you may wonder, because I chose the Lexmark option *see picture*
Now I have to choose PPD, but I don't where this file might be, could it be in the lexmark-install folder, where I extracted that .sh file?

Followed those instructions. At first I added the printer while it was off, tried it with the printer on too.
Also the model of my printer is Lexmark x2530.
See what I went through in these pics. Also notice in the last screen at the printer sign the attention sign, I dd not get this while using the PPD file.

Otherwise I really don't know!. :D

bozdo

Sun May 25, 2014 7:45:43 am

I'm using VM Ware to test the OS. I'm planning on dumping Windows 7 and using only Zorin, doesn't this make the link that you just posted useless?

Wolfman

Sun May 25, 2014 7:48:33 am

I would say it does as the only problem you really have is getting the printer running in VM!, the actual install should be done with the printer connected and switched on!. :D

Save any printer driver packages you downloaded in case you need them!. :D

bozdo

Sun May 25, 2014 1:13:55 pm

Seems very complicated.
I've heard that it should work with a live cd. In my case usb stick.
I've started a live session and I'm at the localhost:631 part. It asks me for user name and password. Dunno what to type in...

Wolfman

Mon May 26, 2014 5:58:03 am

Hi,

in a live session there are "NO PASSWORDS"!, all you need to do is go to System Settings > Hardware > Printers > Add and it should set it up assuming that it has the drivers, your model is sadly one that requires a lot of work to get it up and running as you have already found out and it may not work at all as a Live CD!..

Do a full install and you shouldn't have a real problem because you have all the info you need including the drivers from the earlier links in this thread!.

I have given you all you need to do the task, I don't have a Lexmark printer alone because of their lack of support for Linux!, I own an HP printer and I plug it in and set it up in seconds!.

bozdo

Mon May 26, 2014 10:17:30 am

And yet it asks me to fill in the blanks.
I did add the printer through system settings, didn't work.
I'm trying through CUPS, localhost:631/ , but it asks for a username and pass.

Swarfendor437

Mon May 26, 2014 12:03:46 pm

Would suspect it should be your user login and name - if you set to autologin - bad idea - it won't be possible! ;)

bozdo

Mon May 26, 2014 2:16:14 pm

But I don't get to choose user login or pass, it's live mode

Swarfendor437

Mon May 26, 2014 4:50:10 pm

Well that used to be 'live' with no password - no guarantees mind! :D

Wolfman

Tue May 27, 2014 5:20:08 am

Hi,

you could try user "root" and password "root", it may or may not work, I have otherwise not heard of passwords for a live CD of Ubuntu based systems?.

The other suggestion is user "guest" and password "guest".

The above are what a lot of distros use for their live CD'S!.

bozdo

Tue May 27, 2014 10:59:17 am

I've tried these words. Not working...

Wolfman

Tue May 27, 2014 3:14:47 pm

Then I have no idea as it shouldn't be happening?.

Did you fully format your USB stick before creating your bootable OS?:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4771

bozdo

Tue May 27, 2014 3:16:54 pm

yup

Wolfman

Tue May 27, 2014 5:15:27 pm

Sorry but I'm beaten, try installing Zorin proper or try a different OS!. :D

bozdo

Fri May 30, 2014 5:06:02 pm

So this time I've installed the OS without VM Ware and no more Live Sessions.
I've followed these instructions first: http://archbird.blogspot.co.nz/2012/04/ ... xmark.html
Then the instructions from this link http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/220
Then I downloaded this http://www.openprinting.org/driver/Postscript-Lexmark/ and used it in the CUPS menu.
Same thing as before, doesn't work.

Wolfman

Sat May 31, 2014 7:08:58 am

Hi,

as I said in my previous post, I am beat, I don't know why it won't install!.

All I can suggest which is a drastic measure is to buy a new HP printer because they work no problem with Linux, pack the Lexmark printer in a box and post to Lexmark and tell them where they can shove it!. Furthermore; I would write them a letter demanding that they supply you with workable drivers for Linux!.

Their support for Linux is very bad and I will never ever buy one of their products be it a printer or anything else!.

Sorry but I don't have any other answers for you!. :(
