I have some files on my Windows machine and I want them transfered to my Zorin PC.
Tried sharing a folder using some tutorials...
I think I have to reinstall samba, not quite sure how though.
This is the error I get when I tried sharing a folder.

Hi, first off you have a warning message at the bottom that will be key - you cannot have a workgroup name that is no different to the netbios name:

http://smallcitydesign.com/is-the-netbi ... main-name/

which could be a starting point.

The other is that you appear to be creating a share on a Windows folder from Zorin - I don't think you can do this - you need to set permissions firstly on the folder within Windows.

Also consider putting information you want to share in the 'public' user folder on Windows.

(C:\Users\public\shared ***).

Other things that can prevent you accessing Windows 8 files is the power options that are hidden - you need to turn the 'sleep' mode off in 8 (basically 8 goes into 'hibernate' mode when you shut down Windows 8 so it never really shuts down - GNU/Linux has always relied on Windows to shut down cleanly if you want to access files and folders on Windows from within GNU/Linux OS).

I think I've found a good tutorial... http://rbgeek.wordpress.com/2012/04/25/ ... ntu-12-04/
I have a problem though, the smb.conf has zero bytes, I pen it with gedit or nano and it's all blank.

OK, open synaptic package manager and in the search box enter 'samba' - see what is installed and mark all for re-installation then 'apply'. It is not something I do - all my stuff is basically on one machine on 3 separate drives. ;)

Just did that. Does this look ok? I have a backup of the file and I'm not sure saved it properly, there was no such option in terminal window.

This might shed some light on the matter:
