Mint 17 Boot Error (Ubuntu)

A friend who lives in the desert a few hundred miles from me is installing Mint 16 or 17 - he is trying both as live sessions first but it won boot even. Please see screenshot below. Hardware is dual core 2.7ghz and 2gig ram. What could the problem be?
