so i am trying to open firefox and a "Firefox Update" box opens and smaller box opens saying "Downloading wine-flash-installer (18MiB)" but it doesn't do anything - even after waiting 30min it doesn't down load and firefox won't open. any ideas? this happened after i installed the latest version of pipelight

How did you install Firefox? I am surprised if you managed to download the Windows.exe version of Firefox as normally mozilla picks up what system you are using when seeking to download Firefox - that 'wine' element suggest that you are running or attempting to run a Windows version - bad idea.

Having done a quick search I would firstly try using the 'Web Browser Chooser' under 'Internet' in the Menu and installing Firefox that way, then to make sure you have the latest version:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Any new versions will be picked up this way, and also through update manager when you are advised of updates. :D
