We bought ultimate 8.1 a few weeks ago and was wondering if we have to re-purchase 9 ultimate or will we get an automatic upgrade?

You cannot upgrade from one release of zorin to the other. You have to make a clean install.
So the question is if you will have to pay again for Zorin 9. As swarf says, you have to ask Artyom.
