Zorin OS 9 64bit Ultimate Sluggish

Raindots

Sun Sep 14, 2014 6:05:04 am

Greetings. I am a big fan of Zorin OS and I own 6 (LTS), 8, and now 9, all ultimate 64bit OS. Besides Zorin OS 9, the rest of the OS's have been very fast and have worked with ease. Sadly, I am finding that Zorin OS 9 64bit Ultimate is running very sluggish. Any help with this would be great. I saw a post here http://zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8114 and I will post my systems info below using the following commands:

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 vga

Greetings. I would like to add, I have had to ditch Zorin OS 9 on my Laptop because it is way to sluggish. What you see about is the installation on my Desktop. I am using Zorin OS 6 (LTS - 2017) on my Laptop because it seems to run much smoother and faster.

Despite the "no hijacking threads" rule, I think it is appropriate for anyone to post the same issue here. I have been seeing a lot of people having issues with Zorin OS 9. Hopefully we will get answers.

Hi guys, it might be worth contacting AZorin or zorink on these issues - plus if you have Ultimate you should get Help Desk Support - I don't know how many times you are allowed to submit a 'ticket'. ;)

Thanks for the reply. IF we're limited, is this located where the payee can find that information? Thankfully, I have not seen anywhere on there website about being limited. Can you confirm the number of tickets we can submit?

Bear with me while I take a look ;)

Thought I read somewhere where it was 3 tickets but I can't find that on the updated website - AZorin or zorink should help you with that - you can PM them here.

This is the link for logging a ticket - you should have some sort of login to do this when you purchased premium?

Thank you. I have submitted tickets already, using my Zorin OS 9 license. Unfortunately, I was not aware of the possible limits on the amount of tickets we could submit. I would like for this information to be listed in a easy to find place. While I am ok supporting a Linux distro, I think honesty is very important. I do encourage and hope that the Zorin team will add this helpful information to there website. Having a policy like that and not having it listed and clear to the buyer is very shady at best.

Perhaps their policy has changed, in the past I thought it was 3 or 5 tickets in the past - bearing in mind they are a small team, SuSE Linux is massive with the backing of Novell - they offer 3 months support from date of purchase but only on the main machine that it was installed on.

I have submitted a ticket, but I have not had any replies. I have switched back to windows 7 on the desktop and I am using Zorin os 6 on the laptop. Zorin OS 9 was too sluggish for my liking and you're the only one who has replied to the issue. I am rethinking rather or not I wish to keep using Zorin as the support seems to be shallow and not the best.

As I stated earlier, Zorin is a young distribution - it is not massive like Canonical (Ubuntu) or Novell (SuSE Linux) - it comprises of the two Zorin brothers and two Devs. That is why you can always come here for assistance where we can. Also bear in mind that NO distribution has the funds to buy every possible configuration of hardware that is out there! ;)

If you want something that is GNU/Linux friendly then you need to get an underpowered Lemote Notebook:

I did a comparison Linux Mint(32 bit) laptop 24 gb memory, i7 quad core, 250 gb ssd VS desktop(zorin 64 bit) 24 gb memory, i7 quad core 180 gb ssd. Both running musicbrainz picard
accessing over 40,00 music files held in external usb HDD. Zorin consistently hung while accessing files where screen went blank and sometimes overnight...
Mint never hung, appreciably faster processing of files (like it took 10% of the time)

So.... is it Zorin 64 bit really slow? or Linux Mint 32 bit is really fast?

There are some additional PC stats I would like to see, I know I disable Compiz animations, and a few other thing to make my OS feel faster, and after doing so, It seemed like 9 way notably faster then 7 or 8.

Please run this.
Code:
free -m
grep -m 1 name /proc/cpuinfo

It should result in something like this.
Code:
$ free -m
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          2991       2380        610        275        102       1294
-/+ buffers/cache:        982       2008
Swap:            0          0          0

$ grep -m 1 name /proc/cpuinfo
model name   : Pentium(R) Dual-Core  CPU      E5400  @ 2.70GHz

Some addition helpful information would be, when does it feel sluggish, all the time or just when certain kinds of actions are being performed, or when it has been on for extended periods of time? What is the computer normally used for?

Hopefully we will be able to get this issues fixed as soon as possible for you!
