This all the info I have on my system. I am running a Cisco EA4500 dual band wifi router and want to put my Linux box on the 5ghz band. I have a Belkin F9L1101v1 usb adapter but it doesn't seem to be recognized by Zorin OS 9. I need a step by step to install the adapter or info on one that will plug in and work. Thanks in advance. Can you please post back here the results of the following 4 terminal commands. Please put the result of each command in "code" tags (like I do below), otherwise it is too difficult to read.

Code:
lsusb
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all
lsmod

Can you tell me again what is the problem?
I see here:
Code:
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath9k_htc driverversion=3.13.0-36-generic firmware=1.3 ip=192.168.1.160 link=yes

That your wireless adapter has been recognized, it uses ath9k_htc as the driver, and is linked to the internet (link=yes).

I am trying to install a Belkin F9L1101v1 usb adapter so I can put this system on the 5ghz band. The adapter I am using only does the 2ghz band. It worked out of the box when I got years ago, the belkin I purchased a couple of days ago and doesn't work out of the box, so I am trying to get it into my system. Do you need me to put it in the system and run the same commands?

Yes. The results I got from you up to now correspond to the netgear USB adapter.

Your card needs ndiswrapper to work.
Plug the ethernet cable to get internet (or the netgear adapter), open synaptics package manager from the zorin menu, and find and install the following packages:

ndisgtk
ndiswrapper-common
ndiswrapper-utils-1.9
ndiswrapper-source
ndiswrapper-dkms

(You find the packages in synaptic, right-click and select them for installation and then hit 'apply').

After you install the above packages, download the drivers you need from the following link: (I searched and found them for you).

http://media.cdn.ubuntu-de.org/forum/at ... _v2.tar.gz

Once this is downloaded in your Downloads file, find and, right click it and select "extract here" so as the folder with the drivers can be revealed. (it will be named "2612284-Broadcom_bcm43xx_USB_32_64bit_v2".

Now, unplug your ethernet cable (and/or your netgear USB adapter), and plug the Belkin adapter.
From the Zorin menu find and open "windows wireless drivers".
Once this will open, sellect "add new driver" and browse to the file you downloaded and extracted in your downloads folder. In there you will find 2 files. Two of them are '.inf" files. Try them both to see which of them works. I suggest you try first the "bcmn43xx32.inf"
After you select the "inf" file, if all has gone well, you should get a message "hardware present", and the lights of your belkin USB adapter should start blinking.

If all above is ok and you can connect to the internet, just to be sure that your belkin will work after any reboot, open terminal and run the following command:

Code:
echo 'ndiswrapper' | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

That's it.

This what I am now getting when I run those commands. I seem to be able to connect to the 2ghz band but not the 5ghz band.

Unfortunately it seems that 5ghz band does not work under ndiswrapper.
And ndiswrapper is the only way to get your specific Belkin card working.

You will have more success for 5ghz with atheros based chipsets.
Your netgear WNA1100 usb adapter is atheros based, but does not support 5ghz.

In a search through the internet I found that Netgear WNDA3200 is atheros based, it works under linux and supports the 5ghz band. However, I have not tried it myself.

Just one other thing to consider - if you do get a dongle that supports 5 GHz anyone else using your network may not be able to get on - I have an ASUS router and if I were to switch to 5 GHz no-one in the rest of the house would get access! :D
