Wireless not working, then disappeard

Hello,

first post and new to Linux, so please forgive me.

My mum was running Windows XP on her laptop - very light user - so I installed Zorin OS 9 for her and I loved it, So I wanted it for myself (Win 7)

I have a Samsung R580 laptop with 4G ram and i3 330M CPU so I installed Zorin OS 9 core (64 bit) from a bootable USB drive and it works fine apart from my wireless connection was performing very poorly -1mbs . Search for "additional drivers" produced no results, so I searched for a solution in the forums.

I checked via terminal that my Realtek adaptor was being seen and a kernel was present before I did anything ( but now it does not show the kernel, below)

currently showing:

-R580:~$ lspci -knn | grep -EiA2 net
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8192E/RTL8192SE Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8192] (rev 01)

Subsystem: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd Device [144d:c06a]
Kernel driver in use: sky2
-R580:~$

So from a forum post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 81631.html

I downloaded the Win XP driver and the ndiswrapper files. However, now there is no sign of a wifi icon / connection option in the taskbar and I can only use ethernet. I've redownloaded and reinstalled the driver/ndiswrapper files several times but still no joy.

Any help, gratefully received.

Thansk

Hi,

run this terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) command using your ethernet cable and see if you can see the WiFi after a reboot once the updaes are done, you may have missing dependencies and the command below will install them!:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Restart after running command!. :D

Hi,

thanks for the reply. I ran the command and rebooted, but no joy. When I remove the ethernet cable, there is no wifi connection option appearing in the taskbar, just ethernet, VPN etc...

Hi,

go here and download the top file under the "europe" list and save it, once downloaded, install using "gdebi". Right click > open with > gdebi:

https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/all/ ... k/download

You might want to install "gdebi" if you don't already have it installed!.

Using your network cable; run this command from a terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi

Text from the website for the driver package:

Binary firmware for Realtek wired and wireless network adapters

This package contains the binary firmware for some Ethernet adapters with the RTL8111/RTL8168 chips supported by the r8169 driver; and wireless network cards with the RTL8188, RTL8192 and RTL8712 chips supported by the r8192_pci, r8192s_usb, r8712u, rtl8192ce, rtl8192cu, rtl8192de and rtl8192se drivers.

I hope its the right one!. :D

Hi,

please read through this thread as he had the same problem as you:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8813

Did you burn the ISO at the slowest possible speed?.

Can you also try something else? I think that your specific wireless card needs the very latest Realtec drivers, that unfortunately will be included in kernel 3.19 (!). (So i don't think you need to mess with ndiswrapper for the time being.)

However, you can try to get the drivers now in your kernel with git.

Open terminal and run the following commands:

Code:
sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-generic dkms
git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
cd rtl8192se
sudo make dkms

A restart will probably be needed.

Hello,

Right. I did a fresh install using a brand new 8GB USB stick. WIFI shows up but strength was frequently infatuating between 1mbs and 135 mbs and then the connection would cease after a few minutes.

I did the things suggested in the other chaps post you included in the thread, but the connection would still disconnect after a few minutes.

I still cannot install the Realtek drivers from because of the "broken pipe" problem.

Why is it still not working????

HELP.

Hi,

from a look at my hardware in terminal, could the problem be that my Realtek wireless is 32 bit and I'm running 64 bit Zorin 9 ?

*-network

Does this mean I have to downgrade to 32 bit Zorin, or find a 64 bit driver ?

In addition, when I take out the ethernet cable and my laptop switches to wireless, which works. I then run iwconfig and it says:

Just a litle side note - if your router is a Realtek one then I would rename it to something else to prevent any hackers that may live in your area from gaining potential access! ;)
