[SOLVED] Passwords rejected

I just had an unnerving experience - my passwords for login are being rejected. I just logged in yesterday, and now today I cannot log in, either to my Admin account nor my regular user account.

I bypassed the login screen and went to a command line, where I CAN log in successfully with my ID/password. So, where are the log-in screen data stored and can it be reset/removed so I can use the login screen to log in?

Also, since I logged in, how do I get the GUI restored?

Thanks for any info..

Hi CP,

are you using the normal user name at the login screen or are you trying to log into the guest account?. (might be a daft question but it doesn't hurt to ask!)

Try these links:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LostPassword

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Also which iteration (9?) of Zorin are you using, and which version - Core, Ultimate, Lite, 32-bit or 64-bit? :D

Although I have never seen this in Linux it is possible that the login screen may not be able to handle some complex characters. Try changing your password to something simple, and try logging in, and then slowly increasing the strength of the password, try to identify a character that might be causing issues so a bug report may be submitted.

To change your password from terminal
press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [T]
A terminal windows should open up and run
Code:
passwd
it will ask for your current password and then you will need to enter a new password 2 times, Please be aware that the password will not print to STDOUT, what that means, you will not see any of the passwords as your type them.

Hope this helps!

Thanks all - I found another post on another site (Ask Ubuntu) regarding log-in issues, and the first solution was to use chmon to reset permissions for X11 files:
chmon username:username Xauthority

This worked.
Other items of note: review the xsession-errors file for any reference to log-in issues. Unfortunately, I could not locate this file on my computer.

Hi CP,

take a look here:

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/har ... ion.5.html

I haven't read through it so it will keep you busy for a while, I hope it helps. :D

Can we mark this thread as solved as your OP is now solved?. :D
