[SOLVED] resolution 1680 x 1050 not available

cestran

Wed Jan 21, 2015 11:23:37 pm

Hi,

My screen is a Samsung Syncmaster 2243nw, resolution 1680 x 1050. Here, on Zorin 9, I can only choose between 1024 x 768 and 600 x 800.

I inserted this passage into /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=VGA-1:edid/1680x1050.bin"

Then I did this:

sudo update-grub

This is the result:

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... Generating /boot/grub/default file and setting the default boot entry to 0
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ...

Could not find /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Would you like /boot/grub/menu.lst generated for you? (y/N) y
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-30-generic
Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

Then reboot... but still the same 1024 x 768 screen.

What else could I do? Sorry, I need a step-by-step instruction as I am no expert in this field.

Next time you boot, press the TAB or E key to edit the boot command and enter:

Code:
acpi=off nomodeset forcevesa

Keep us posted!

Thanks, I tried the boot command.

By the way: Is this the correct screen? (See attachment). Looks very primitive & not easy to use.

"CODE: SELECT ALL", then "Enter" does not work (Unlike in the attachment picture I took care of the space between the ":" and the "S". Which means, that the command was not found.

"acpi=off nomodeset forcevesa" seems to be accepted, but there are no results given.

The only way out of this rudimentary terminal seems to be via pressing "ESC".

Oops, I seem to have misunderstood. "CODE..." etc. is what it says at the beginning of every code block. Sorry! Anyway, what about this command afterwards? I still can't choose the correct resolution.

Hi,

once you have fully booted, paste the following command in a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and then paste the results back here:

Code:
lspci

You will end up with a result like this, and we are interested in the highlighted part:

Hi,

oops, a typo; sorry!, I have corrected it!.

Take a look here as you the "Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller" and you might want to follow the advice given on the link below with reference to installing any further packages which may or may not enhance your graphic cards performance!:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/166224/h ... -my-system

You can download the installer directly from here:

https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads

Graphics Installer for Linux 1.0.7 for Ubuntu, either the 32 or 64 Bit version, I cannot help you any further as I don't have an Intel graphics card!.

3.)

Install driver (Linux 1.0.7 for Ubuntu, 32 bit) from here:

https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads

4.)

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
Updated versions of X.org drivers, libraries, etc. for Ubuntu.

This PPA is for stable upstream releases of X.org components.  If you're looking for something even more bleeding-edge, please see the xorg-edgers PPA.

While Ubuntu does not "officially/formally" support these packages, if you discover problems when installing these debs please feel free to report bugs to launchpad.  However, please make sure to clearly state that you are running packages from this PPA so we know the fixes need to come here.

If you are upgrading from one release to another with this PPA activated, please install the ppa-purge package and use it to downgrade everything in here beforehand. sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates will do it.

7.) Reboot

Result: Still no 1680 x 1050 screen available...

Edit:

I just discovered a small program on my computer which is called "Intel Graphics Installer for Linux" (see attachment). Sadly - when you want to start it - says "distribution not supported".

Hi,

which version of Zorin OS are you using?.

Reading from the feedback you posted, you already have the latest drivers anyway!.

You can try installing Xrand which will give you more control over the monitor settings, use the following terminal command and run Xrand and see if you can change the settings:

Code:
sudo apt-get install arandr

Anleitung in Deutsch bekommst du hier: (Instructions in German are available here)

Hi,

did you mean RandR (installed with
Code:
xrandr
) or ARandR (installed with
Code:
arandr
). The latter seems especially suited for two or more monitors (I only have one).

Anyway, I tried this:

Code:
user@user-OptiPlex-755:~$ xrandr --query
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
VGA1 connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768       60.0*
   800x600        60.3     56.2
   848x480        60.0
   640x480        59.9
DVI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

And:

Code:
xrandr --auto

But no improvement so far. Suggestions welcome!

(Btw, my system is Zorin OS 9. It also says so underneath my postings.)

Hi cestran,

I thought that "arandr" was the frontend for "xrand"?:

"ARandR is a visual front end for XRandR 1.2/1.3 (per display options), which
provides full control over positioning, saving and loading to/from shell
scripts and easy integration with other applications."

What monitor do you have and have you tried resetting that?. :D (I doubt that it will help though!)

cestran

Sat Jan 24, 2015 7:02:50 pm

1. Installed

2. Started "Arandr"

Code:
user@user-OptiPlex-755:~$ arandr
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"

Let's hope, I can manage without this scrollbar...

The program looks like this (see below).

For different resolutions but none of them correct. I would like to enter something myself but there doesn't seem to be a possibility. When I click on "new", nothing happens.

Sorry for asking. I know you haven't experienced those kind of problems yet. However, I'm glad for any kind of ideas.

Hi,

run the following terminal commands (Ctrl + Alt + t) in order and see if you can force any missing dependencies you might have that are causing the problem.

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

then:

Code:
sudo apt-get install -f

then:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

RESTART!.

Let us know if this helps. :D

cestran

Sat Jan 24, 2015 7:37:19 pm

I did the updates, then started Arandr again but no luck! (The program looked just like before and I couldnt enter anything...) However, the scrollbar message didnt show up.

Hi cestran,

do you also have a DVI or HDMI connector for your monitor?. I assume from your pic you are using VGA!. :D

Hi Wolfman,

I happen to have a DVI socket but the monitor plug wont fit in there.

Hi cestran,

maybe you could buy an adapter as they don't cost much!, did you try resetting the monitor like I suggested earlier?. :D

Do you think with DVI it will work?

With my monitor I tried the auto adjustment button if that is what you mean. (Which is mainly to center and sharpen the image.) I can also choose between "normal" and "wide" (which is not recommendable because everything looks flat and stretched out).

I see you graphics is 'integrated' is it possible to install a separate grahics card in your rig? It might be the simplest solution! ;)

Hi cestran,

if your graphics card has a DVI / HDMI out and your monitor has sockets for those types of connections, it might just work but I cannot be certain!.

I don't think that with an integrated graphics card, you will have such connections; although I may well be wrong!.

What you can try is to run the Live CD and see what screen resolutions you have, if you can get 1680 x 1050 with the Live CD, we will know that the problem lies somewhere within the system settings and maybe we can track it down?. Please try it at least once and see what happens!. :D

Thank you both for your replies!

I ran the zorin-live-cd once more but there was no difference concerning resolution.

I will try the two links you provided (they looked quite helpful). If this doesn't improve my situation I have decided that I will return to Ubuntu 14.04 (which I haven't tried on this computer yet, especially with the Intel graphics card, but in my view is easier to handle).

Thanks again!

Hi you guys,

I can't believe it: Now the whole thing suddenly works. I don't know why I haven't tried this before.

Those were my steps (following your advice and the ubuntu-wiki's):

1.)

Code:
~$ randr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
VGA1 connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768       60.0*
   800x600        60.3     56.2
   848x480        60.0
   640x480        59.9
DVI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

2.)

Code:
~$ cvt 1680 1050 60
# 1680x1050 59.95 Hz (CVT 1.76MA) hsync: 65.29 kHz; pclk: 146.25 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00"  146.25  1680 1784 1960 2240  1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync

3.)

Code:
~$ xrandr --newmode "1680x1050_60.00"  146.25  1680 1784 1960 2240  1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync

4.)

Code:
~$ xrandr --addmode VGA1 "1680x1050_60.00"

5.)

Code:
~$ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode "1680x1050_60.00"

At this point I already had my 1680x1050 screen (no reboot needed). I just had to write this into some file to make the change permanent.

6.)

Code:
~$ sudo gedit /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45x11-custom_xrandr-settings

7.) enter this into file, save and exit:

xrandr --newmode "1680x1050_60.00" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync

xrandr --addmode VGA1 "1680x1050_60.00"

xrandr --output VGA1 --mode "1680x1050_60.00"

That was all! Frankly, I had already abandoned all hope. Thanks again for your help!
I might have another question concerning printer installation. Don't know yet if it works or not. You'll find me on a new forum page...
