some questions on linux

once i got the hang about partitions and their terminology, installing zorin proved relativity easy and not as bad as i expected.

however, in no particular order, i have a few questions please .....

1) i know that both my desktop and laptop are linked in a small home network simply because they are both connected to my internet source but how can i transfer a file or files (like spreadsheets/letters/photos etc.) safely from one to another? would running samba do this for me? i ask this because i used a 16gig flash drive to do exactly that. however, the result was that the 2 files as well as other data were wiped when i put it into the (linux) laptop. when i put it back into the desktop, the f/drive wasn't recognised.

2) can the verticle & horizontal scrollbars be made a bit wider?

3) the mouse roller only scrolls 1 or 2 lines at a time. how can i increase this?

4) when starting to download a programme via synaptic, loads of other files appear in a list that have to be downloaded too. because i don't want to fill up my disk space with unnecessary files, do i need all/some of them and if i do, how can i tell which ones i don't need?

5) it'll be quite a while before i have sufficient knowledge to successfully work with terminal. till then, can samba be run from a windows interface?

6) i've looked at a few books on linux tutorials but most seem to concentrate on using the terminal rather that the gui. that's fine but to start, i'd like to find a book that concentrates more on the gui. any suggestions please?

7) i've not managed to download any programmes that are outside the synaptic umbrella yet because i'm not sure of the exact route to take. i know wine and playonlinux are involved but that's about it. i'm a bit stuck.

Hi,

for Samba start here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba

Yes you do need all the updates as they are in real terms "System Critical"!.

For the terminal:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

See this also regarding what types of packages you can install:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1778&p=6447#p6447

For scrollbar:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8860

For mousepad, check in System Settings > Hardware > Mouse & Touchpad.

Hope it helps and please only post one question per thread, you can start as many threads as you like but please don't bunch it all together as a part of it (the thread) will be solved and the rest won't (sometimes!).
