Hi Stephanie,

open nautilus (your home folder) and click on Computer > usr > share > icons, application icons are in Computer > usr > share > pixmaps

or press Ctrl + h (show hidden files) and look for the .icons folder :D

If you want to make any changes, you must make yourself root first, open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and paste the following command:

Code:
gksudo nautilus

Just to add if you are creating a folder on your desktop or an application shortcut from scratch you won't need to use the nautilus command but you will need to know the location of the icons - the ones that are pixmaps may need privileges but the standard '/usr/share/icons' should be available for you to apply to desktop folders you create. :D
