Zorin OS Base Update?

newbie13

Mon Mar 16, 2015 8:22:20 pm

I'm getting an alert for a Zorin OS Base technical update, but I have been having trouble with someone (most likely my neighbor upstairs) getting into my computer despite my friend arming it with Linux, this time a COMPLETE Linux rather than an XP/Linux split.

Anyway, is there an update? I searched the forum and found nothing; that's why I'm reticent to install it.

Thank you!

Your screenshot, sir (or ma'am!).

I started out on Comcast Secured Wireless when I was running Full Monty, then changed to wired when someone told me that was more secure. I was broadcasting my network name, but after using WPS to connect my TV's streaming device (lesson learned), the pecks at my Router/Modem just flooded in, so I've changed it to nonbroadcasting and remain on Ethernet.

I'm sorry, but you'll have to ask me questions because I really don't know what you need. Not only do I know nothing about what goes into programming Linux, but I also know very little about the jargon or how to run the OS. That's why my friend has now set me up with one of the Windows-User-friendly versions. He tried Mint first, but that wouldn't cooperate. I don't remember why. I do know that with Zorin, there's a conflict with my Broadcom card, so I am only able to connect via Ethernet. (I'm on a Dell Inspiron B130.) He's hunting for a fix for that before the multimedia (no celebs, tho) con we both attend in May. Kinda sucks to be at a con with all this inspiration around you and not be able to go online and share thoughts/stories/art.

Oh, and KUDOS to you for making the words in my signature offensive terms! At least some leaders on the Internet take the "R" word campaign seriously! *HUGS YOU* I grew up being called that by my dad, and then when I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome at 35, I turned and glared daggers at him and said, "Wish granted!" (Obviously, I know Asperger syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder and that term is passe; I was trying to make a point with my father.)

There was no technical information or description--another thing that made me wary.

Regarding your broadcom wireless card problem, can you please open terminal (ctrl+alt+T), run the following commands (one by one) and post the results back here?
Thank you.

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all
lsmod

Have you done a full system update?:

(I pasted it twice because it printed the first four lines immediately, wrapped, and stopped; so, I thought it might not have registered my keyboard paste. The above results are what happened when I then used the terminal window menu's paste function just in case the keyboard didn't register.)

Thanks!

Yes, I know to check synaptec regularly; and I now know that, with this version of Linux, I also have to check the system updater. But, yes, even though I have the version newer than any others spoken of online, we checked for updates as soon as it was installed.

I'm a former Windows XP Pro S3 user, and my friend is a literal computer (and otherwise) genius. Trust me. We covered every base we could think of.

*HUGS*

Have you copied/pasted the commands one by one or all together? It seems like you copied/pasted all four of them (unless I am mistaken ofcourse), as the results you produced have nothing to do with what I was normally expecting.

You have to copy/paste each command line separately and then hit <enter> after each one to see the results.

Can you please try again? Thanx.

OHHHHHhhhhhhhh! That could make a difference!

Okay, for future reference: When giving me instructions, imagine you're speaking to a Sheldon Cooper who knows nothing about computers. I write how-tos without taking anything for granted because that's how I need them. Thanks!

Okay, I see where you did say, "(one at a time)," in your original reply. My apologies. My brain is being pulled in so many stressful directions it isn't funny.

Good news is, we got a lot more results on this try. Only the last two commands didn't do anything.

Try this.
Download from here the b43 firmware: https://www.dropbox.com/s/n2tjz9jnj9xw5 ... ar.gz?dl=0
(I have uploaded it onto my dropbox account). (If you have ethernet connection do it on your own PC, otherwise you can download it from another PC that has internet connection, and then copy/paste it to your Zorin PC with the use of a USB stick).

As soon as it is downloaded, paste the b43.tar.gz firmware file you downloaded into your home folder.
Right click on it and select "extract here". A new file will be created named "b43".
Open terminal (ctrl+alt+T) and write the following commands, the one after the other, pressing <enter> after each one:

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/b43
sudo cp b43/* /lib/firmware/b43
sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe b43

Wait 4-5 seconds and see if you can connect to wireless networks.
