Zorin 9 OS Lite Unable to locate printer

Unable to locate printer...

First some background. I installed Zorin 9 OS Core on my Sony VAIO which worked well. It recognized my WIFI connection and the wireless printer network connection without a hitch. Everything works fine.

My Acer Aspire One which has an Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz, 1 G RAM) has Zorin 9 OS Lite. It also recognized my home WIFI. However the Netbook does not recognize the wireless printer connection.

I turned on the Sony and found the Device URI for the printer connection and copied it into my Netbook printer configuration. The Netbook still was unable to connect. I rebooted the Netbook and it recognized the connection to the wireless printer and I was able to print a test page. When I went to print something else from the internet, the Netbook could not find the printer. I rebooted again and the Netbook hasn't been able to see the printer since.

I looked at the printer que and checked the Netbook job attributes where I found the following difference between the Sony laptop and the Acer Netbook...

Sony Laptop job attributes
job-printer-state-message:
job-printer-state-reasons: [u'marker-supply-low-warning']

I suppose that means one of my ink tanks is low.

Netbook job attributes
job-printer-state-message: Unable to locate printer
job-printer-state-reasons: [u'none']

none meaning no printer?

All other attributes except the job-uuid were the same. The attributes for the printer-uri was the same.

Anyone got any ideas like get closer to the WIFI connection

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

you should go to System Settings > Hardware > Printers and remove any printers if shown, restart with your printer connected via a USB cable, do not set up a printer first time using wireless!.

Once restarted. go back into System Settings > Hardware > Printers > Add and add your printer!. (What printer is it?)

Let us know what happens. :D

Hi, if the printer is networked or attached to another PC I always find this works best from a terminal:

Code:
sudo system-config-printer

True, it brings up the same interface but it works better than directly through the gui (from personal experience!) :D

Are you two guys following me around?

I will work on both your suggestions. I promised the Missus that I would finish up on our taxes on the first rainy day. Today is that day.

Yes we are Bob!.

You still haven't told us what make of printer it is, it can make all the difference as there are different ways of installing different printers!. :D

I like to think that I am a pretty detailed oriented person, but I realize from these forums that I am not as oriented as I detail think I am. ;)

I have a Canon MG8220. Canon (printer network) disk is installed on my Windows 7 OS computer.

I did pretty much as Wolfman suggested. For Zorin 9 OS Lite the path from the main menu was System Tools>Printers. I deleted the existing printer. I rebooted the Netbook and installed the printer (Canon MG8200 series) via a USB cable and was able to print, but only while being physically connected. I am still not able to print using WIFI.

I never was able to see the Canon (printer network) connection wirelessly. I tried to directly connect the Netbook to the router with a CAT5 cable, but still the Netbook did not see the Canon printer network.

Is there a second step to this procedure so I can print wirelessly?

BTW Swarfendor, I was not able to find the means to use the terminal in Zorin 9 OS Lite.

Hi Bob,

firstly, sorry that I forgot you are using Zorin Lite!.

Secondly, take a look on Ask Ubuntu as you might be better off there as I (I don't think any of the other mods do either?) don't have a Canon printer:

Hope it helps. :D

It's all good. We're still friends.

It's a printer network that the Canon disk installed. Zorin 9 OS Core recognized it right away through WIFI, so it must be installed on my router [ASUS RT-AC66R (Wireless-AC1750)].

It says the "World's Fastest 5G Wi-Fi" right on the box which I kept for proof. Must be true right? I mean they wouldn't lie about something like that. Would they? ;)

Of course its true Bob, Big Business would never lie to its customers!. :D

So, is this solved now?. :D

Happy Easter

No it's not solved yet.

I been trying to multi-task lately and since I'm not personally equipt with parallel processors and my clock speed is old, er... um I mean slow, not much getting done. Interesting how everything seems to slow down with age.

Besides it's Easter and the skunk cabbage is popping (first sign of spring). I have also been spending more time in the woods or going to market behind those Amish buggies. Road hogs.

Happy Easter Wolfman.

Swarfendor:

I'm so used to the GUI environment. Sigh.

I wasn't able to find the means to open the terminal in Zorin 9 OS Lite until I went to Ubuntu Wiki at the suggestion of Wolfman Jack. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfman_Jack

I found the keyboard command <ctrl><alt><t> to access the terminal there. I tried your suggestion, but the Printer Installer did not see the Canon Printer Network.

Ubuntu Wiki has some advice which I will try next.

Thanks for posting back.

I tried, but failed. I will try again.

Here is my terminal failure. I should probably rephrase that.

wayne@wayne-AOA110:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon-trunk
[sudo] password for wayne:
Official drivers of Canon printers and multifunction devices, included versions 2.20 and newer (2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8)
More info: https://launchpad.net/~michael-gruz/+ar ... anon-trunk
Press [ENTER] to continue or ctrl-c to cancel adding it

I hit ENTER (maybe I should have pressed it instead :) )

gpg: keyring `/tmp/tmpyg60r6va/secring.gpg' created
gpg: keyring `/tmp/tmpyg60r6va/pubring.gpg' created
gpg: requesting key 3F7B4A1D from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: /tmp/tmpyg60r6va/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created
gpg: key 3F7B4A1D: public key "Launchpad Misakovi" imported
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)
OK

Then after the colon (:~$) I typed...

wayne@wayne-AOA110:~$ cnijnetprn --search auto

and got...

cnijnetprn: command not found

This is the result following the directions from Linux Wiki.

http://linux.wikia.com/wiki/Getting_Can ... k_on_Linux

... so what am I missing to be able to install my Canon Printer Network!

Anyone? :?

I feel like I'm peeling back layers of an onion.

Let me try some more things before taxing the brains of all you Linux experts out there. There are instructions on another page which were imbedded in the terminal download which I apparently need to follow:

https://launchpad.net/~michael-gruz/+ar ... anon-trunk

You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by adding ppa:michael-gruz/canon-trunk to your system's Software Sources. (Read about installing)

Hi Bob,

you can get deb packages from Canon Asia:

http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/?personal

There is also this:

And last but not least:

http://supportdrivers.info/category/canon-drivers/

I thought you already had the drivers?. :D

Thanks Wolfman, I will check those sites you mentioned.

I let myself get side tracked and my priorities are a little jumbled right now.

I also saw something in the Getting Started with Ubuntu 14.04 Second Edition on page 79 that may be worth a try. Under the heading Adding a network printer the third paragraph states:

You can also add your network printer by entering the ip address of the
printer. Select “Find Network Printer,” enter the ip address of the printer
in the box that reads Host: and press the Find button. Ubuntu will find the
printer and add it. Most printers are detected by Ubuntu automatically. If
Ubuntu cannot detect the printer automatically, it will ask you to enter the
make and model number of the printer.

My experience with a Brother DCP-J925DW is about the same. Ends up with "Unable to locate printer" when I try to print. Here is what I did: Uninstalled printer via System-config-printer and installed it again using the url collected from printer. Worked like a charm. Before installing the printer I installed the necessary drivers collected from Brother.com It has always been a pain to install printers from Brother in Linux. Hope this helps.
