Hi Swarf,

Tried installing Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit LTS.

Does one have to unplug all usb devices like cooler tray?

Got Installed but during installation could feel the key pad warm and fans running high?

Thanks.

I hope it wont fry up my Nvidia 7900 GTX 512 MB?

Been burnt 3 time earlier with W7 Pro 32 bit despite I use Dell Fan utility app and a cooler tray??

Thanks.

Hi, try running 32-bit instead - also do a search for 'overheating issues on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit and Nvidia 7900 GTX 512 frying' using duckduckgo search engine.

Keep us posted! ;)

Thanks Swarf for your expert reply.

Hi,

for the Ultimate version, go here and select which one you want, as Swarf said, I would go with 32 Bit as I do myself even though I have a 64 Bit rig!:

You shouldn't need to unplug any USB devices!.

If you want to know about partitioning:

er hm... There is not that much of an age gap with me and Wolfman - in another post I said that Wolfman could be my big brother and madvinegar our very young one! ;)

I'm a teenager at heart too! :D

Going back to USB, the only caution would be for memory sticks and external drives!!!! :D

What media should I use to burn iso images.......DVD-R or DVD-RW........W7 Pro 32 bit DVD runs like a charm in the optical drive.

Ubuntu 14.04 both 64 andd 32 bit wont install......... :(

Can I use an usb optical drive to install, cause the built in Toshiba is pretty c***......if yes what changes do I need to do in the setup?

Thanks again.

Use quality DVD-R or -RW - it should not matter, e.g., Verbatim or TDK. The other consideration is to check the md5sum of the images you have downloaded.

If you are using Windows 7 to download to, use winmd5free from winmd5.com to check the downloaded images' md5 checksum - I posted a tutorial on my veoh.com account - just search for 'swarfendor437' - I can't post a link now as at work and web filter will stop me going to veoh.com - the downside to this channel is 'gambling' links that open as soon as you get there!

Then burn at the 'slowest' possible speed your burner will cope with (most modern ones are 4x min). If burning in Windows, use imgburn but only download from https://ninite.com to save getting confused on imgburn.com's website which has some dubious links!

If burning in GNU/Linux (Gnome DE) and using Brasero start Brasero FIRST, THEN choose the image to burn from the interface - 9/10 you will get a coaster if you right-click the image and select - burn with Brasero!

If you are downloading images to GNU/Linux, navigate to your Downloads folder in the terminal:

Code:
cd Downloads

then

Code:
md5sum [name of the .iso EXACTLY as you see it labelled in your Downloads folder

wait 20 to 30 seconds for the md5 hash - ONLY burn if the md5 hashes match what the Ubunut site says it is! :D

Thanks Swarf I got Ubuntu 64 bit installed finally after several tries.

How do I scan for hardware changes/drivers if any missing?

Distribution 50 GB /, ext 4 Primary Beginning, 4 GB swap and rest /home Logical at the Beginning......is that fine?

How can I make the iso bootable using a flash drive cause the internal optical isn't great or use an external usb optical?

Thanks Wolfman for replying......have given up with Linux again.....despite after several attempts installed Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit my machine is non responsive and acting weird......back to W7.

May be the iso burn isnt good.....dont know how to make a bootable usb......plus don't wanna be bothering you.......windows is c*** vs Zorin but easy to use lol

Best Regards and thanks again.

Hi Chris,

you could take the HDD out and put it in a different laptop (that can boot from USB) and once it it is fully installed, re-install it back in the rig that doesn't have USB support!. :D

You must run a full update again when you put the HDD back in the original laptop!. :D

Hi Chris, according to that review link I posted that Notebook got very warm even running Windows! :(

I would seriousl consider trying Zorin Lite and see if your Notebook fairs better with that? ;)
