[SOLVED] s/w updates crapping out

Freeatlast

Mon Apr 27, 2015 5:26:06 pm

For the past couple of weeks when s/w update notification happens it won't complete due to "untrusted sourced updates"
sw update 2015-04-27 .png

I fiddled with the Settings but found nothing to allow. If I just choose Install I get this:
untrusted.png
untrusted.png (17.06 KiB)

If I press OK it just disappears and the updates don't happen.

Any data as to how to change the "settings" to allow?

Hi,

change your "Software Sources Settings Download Location" per the update guide to "Main", if it is already set to that, change it and try updating again:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

Let us know if it helps!. :D

After searching through SynapticHowto and browsing Settings, Repositories, etc,. There is nothing to set to "Main". A text search of the how to doc also shows nothing in that regards...

Where do bug reports get sent for Zorin 9?

That's nice and all BUT, when I go to synaptic pkg manager as instructed there is no such screen as you show.

THIS: Image is what is there.

I managed to find a different menu where I could choose "Main". Did so and reloaded. Update notice came up. I okay'ed it and still get the message that the updates are from untrusted sources.

Is there a dev email address to send bug reports to for Zorin 9?

Hi,

please take another look at the update guide, there are many tips tips there including repository settings:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

As far as the "Untrusted" message goes, did you add any further PPA's to your system?, if you did, which ones?. :D

I did look at the update guide. Nothing that directly addresses this message was there. I have installed nothing except a couple of games via the Zorin s/w center.

Where is the forum to address the developers of Z9? Since they would have a list of these error messages and would therefore know exactly what the cause and cure would be...

Look in the members list for "azorin" and "zorink".

Change your software sources location per the guide and try updating again as it isn't a dev problem!. :D

I did change the sources. No luck. If an OS's inability to allow updates (a human didn't make or authorize the change) isn't a Dev problem. Nothing is. I started working in s/w dev >35 years ago. I'm familiar with what is a dev issue.
I'll try the people you mentioned. Thanks for your effort I appreciate it.

Usually you only get that if you installed a packaged yourself other than from the main repositories, but wait to be corrected! ;)

Thanks Wolf. I'll try anything at this point. After setting to main and updating I lost all ability to play monies and all repositories wouldn't respond to get files from so I can't repair any packages which the OS is screaming are broken.

Hi,

firstly, where did you get the PPA's from?, did you install them yourself?.

You don't need those codecs packages anyway as all the codecs you need can be obtained from the Zorin/Ubuntu mirrors without the need for 3rd party PPA's!.

Try this terminal command (Ctrl + Alt + t) and disable the 3rd party PPA's that are causing your problem (Take out the tick in your software sources list!):

Code:
sudo apt-get install libav-tools flac faac faad sox ffmpeg2theora libmpeg2-4 uudeview mpeg3-utils mpegdemux liba52-dev mpeg2dec vorbis-tools id3v2 mpg321 mpg123 libflac++6 totem-mozilla icedax  lame libmad0 libjpeg-progs ubuntu-restricted-extras gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gxine libdvdread4 totem-mozilla icedax tagtool easytag id3tool lame nautilus-script-audio-convert libmad0 mpg321 libavcodec-extra gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer1.0-gnonlin gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly totem-plugins-extra gstreamer-tools ttf-mscorefonts-installer

That should keep you going without the need for 3rd party PPA's, some of the packages may well be installed, they will be ignored by the installer process!.

Are you running a 32Bit system?.

No go. Here is the feedback "E: Package 'hal' has no installation candidate"

64 bit. I didn't install anything before this blew up. I don't know why you keep asking about ppa's (whatever they are).

I was adding VLC just t test if I could access packages. ffmpeg is shot I can play no video. Why is it so hard in linux to access these package servers?

Do you think if I bought tech support here they could fix this?

Wolfman

Sat May 02, 2015 5:55:55 am

I'm sure they could but you can fix it yourself by removing the PPA's you added!.

I removed the package "hal" from the meta command list as I didn't notice it was there and it is no longer supported by Ubuntu and that is why it knocked you back, sorry!.

PPA = Personal Package Archive

Take a look here for further info about PPA management:

I added NOTHING. All I did was hit OK when automatic updated asked permission to update.

I'll get support later this week when I have time. I don't have time right now to become a linux mechanic. No wonder almost no one uses this as a desk top OS. Secure but FAR too fidgety.

Thanks for your effortr in fixing my OS.

OK, not installed it on my current Zorin, but Y-PPA is a very useful application that appears in quite a few lightweight distros - this should be included by default I believe - Y-PPA is a PPA manager that manages your existing and new PPA's that allows you to remove them with least complications and uses a GUI (Graphical User Interface) to complete such actions. Been a while since I used it - last time was in Zorin 5 or 6 I believe - by that I mean when I used it. :D

Well, after MUCH research I found that this problem is NOT caused by Zorin. It is a known Ubuntu bug. There are a couple of fixes that work in ~60-70% of cases. Otherwise, you have to reinstall the OS (which is what I had to do).

Case closed

Thanks, I ran into this when researching. I'll probably install for emergency usage.

Just to add, I found a way around this which I forgot I had after installing 3rd Party Software (Multi System):

Open a terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Sorted! :D
