[SOLVED] installing an epson wf-2540

Snowy Rivers

Hi troops

It's been a while since I have been here. Still loving Zorin

I am running version 7 ultimate with no probs

Recently built a new box for my home office and everything is great, EXCEPT
getting the printer to function

I have an Epson WF-2540 all in one

I tried using the install from system tools and no joy.
It installed drivers for a dot matrix generic.????

I went to the Epson downloads and got the drivers listed

There was 64 bit, i386 and i486
Then one listed as RPM

I looked at them all and the last one seems to be the one needed.
The text file shows the 2540 in the list.

My issue, being an old windows user is that after downloading and extracting the files, I am used to clicking on an install icon or a run.exe file to install the driver.

I have poked around a lot and the only thing I find is "Download driver and install"

Ok
Well thats just not quite enough info.

I can handle command line, but have no idea what to tell it to do.

I bit of help here would be great.

The driver is supposed to be the complete package for print, scan copy.

Any of you wonderful geeks out there that care to take a crack at this, I would be real happy to get this beast working.

Also I tried the software center and everything I asked it to install resulted in a message about untrusted packages and it did nothing

Hi SR,

firstly, Zorin 7 is no longer supported!. You should be using at least ver 6 or 9!. (Both LTS).

2nd, go here for your "Linux" drivers and install the "deb" packages you need:

http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... FromResult

See here about updating:

OK

I have the download in the downloads folder and have extracted it.

Now

I do not see anything that looks like a means to get it to install.
As I mentioned, I am used to the Win system of clicking on an icon or an exe file

Where is the go button ????

Hi SR;

install the package "gdebi" then right click your downloaded .deb package(s) and open with Gdebi!.

Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi

See this section of the post install guide for further info:

Tweak Tools and single package manager: Which includes Dconf-Editor, Tweak Tool (AKA: Advanced Settings), Ubuntu Tweak and Gdebi

Just a word of caution, no-one should really be using 6 any more - they should be using Zorin 9 or Zorin 9 Lite:

Bingo

I loaded 9 ultimate on the machine and then installed Gdeb

The epson files loaded without an issue.

I am getting a USB CAUTION on the printer when trying to scan.
May be a cable issue.
I will try a different cable.

Printer does just fine, and the fax works ok.

I can get up and running now

Thank you very much for the help

Hi,

go back to the Epson site and look for the scanner drivers package!.

Also make sure you install the package "xsane". :D

I got the scan drivers and xsane installed
Removed and reinstalled the wf-2540
Prints fine, but still get USB WARNING

I have tried a couple different cables, print fine, but no scan

Well now.

The printer is printing fine and does fax ok too, but scanning is still a bit hinky.

It will not scan to the PC, BUUUUUUUUT I can scan to a travel drive plugged into the printer and it will show up on the screen of the PC
I can easily grab the scan and save it to the PC from the travel drive.

I scan very little, so it's no biggy.
I would like to know why the printer complains about USB error ???

I ran out and bought a set of print cartridges earlier, and the little beauty does a fine job.

All is well.

Thanks for the help in getting things going

Hi SR,

try scanning with "simple scan", you can also try moving the USB cable to another USB slot and see if that helps.

Try running a full system update which also might help. :D

Was the travel drive present when you got the USB warning?

Simple scan gets the scanner buzzing and whirring, but then get IO error
Tried all the USB ports.

Seems that if the printer works via the usb cable/port, then the scanner should as well.

The unit is not brand new, so maybe there is an internal issue ???
The net is full of the same complaints though so likely still a driver problem.

I installed all the scan programs listed in the software center and get the same dismal results.

I tried printing via the wireless network and no joy.
The printer found the network and says its happy, but I can't seem to get the printer and computer to talk.

Hi SR,

I don't have an Epson printer but a girlfriend of mine does and she uses Ubuntu, right click the printer icon in System Settings and on preferences and see if you can make any adjustments there, I will try and visit my friend and have a look at her settings in the next few days!. :D

I gave that a quick look
Nothing there.

Gotta be a driver issue.

I have tried all the different scan programs and some get farther than others.
Scan lite will start the scanner but in a short it stops and complains about USB connection.

I have the machine in the WIFI
Prints sweet, but complains about the scanning

Will scan to a USB travel drive plugged into the printer though and do fine.

Hi SR,

did you download the last package (Scanner drivers) in the list from Epson?:

EPSON Download Center - Google Chrome_006.jpg

yess

I installed all the i386 .deb files in the list

The scanner will start to go then complain about connection error USB

I have tried all the scan programs I can find and one way or another they all fail to scan.

I have Zorin 7 on another machine and an epson NX-215 connected and it prints scans and does it all just fine.

Hi,

open system settings and remove the printer, restart and then try adding the printer again and see if the same message about the USB error shows up!. :D

Done that trick several times, No joy

I am wondering if possibly the printer/scanner may have an issue.

It was used when I got it ?????

I reset it as a wired printer and also a network printer and get the same error no matter how I ask it to scan.

There's an interesting thread here stating the wf-2540 is not supported and sane.org will need the id bits of the scanner to develop a scanner driver (if possible):

Ah well, such is life.

I can scan to a USB stick with it, then transfer it to the PC if need be.

The printer portion works fine, so I guess I will stop beating on it.

Thanks so much for all the help.

Hi SR,

will mark as solved even though it isn't fully operational!. :D
