Bad resolution on Zorin OS 9

It doesn't matter what resolution I choose for Zorin, I have this annoying bar on the right hand side of my screen and also a white bar on the bottom of the screen. The resolution works fine on Vista.

The native resolution to my screen is 1680x1050 and I have a Sony Vaio all-in-one VGC-JS110J. Intel(R) G45/G43 Express Chipset.

If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

I think there is already a link to the Intel 1.0.5 drivers for Ubuntu here already, but because of time constraints, please take a look here:

Remember, Zorin 9 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 :D

Thanks for the reply, but which download do I pick? I tried the Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit and it didn't work..

OK, you need the Ubuntu 14.04 - now as for whether 32-bit or 64-bit will depend on which version of Zorin 9 you installed! :D

I couldn’t find 14.04, it only shows the one for 14.10.

OK, guess I should have gone down the line a bit further - sadly the people behind the intel driver no longer support Ubuntu 14.04:

So blame it on the Intel, not GNU/Linux! :(

So you think I should upgrade to Zorin 10 and is it any good?

All I would advise is to download the 32-bit version of Zorin, particularly if you intend to use any Windows apps through Wine (as I have discovered using 64-bit Zorin 9 can be problematical). Also be aware that Zorin 10 will come to end of life at end of January 2016 in line with Ubuntu 15.04 on which it is based - the next interrmediate release will be for 16.04 I guess - a lot will depend on how long support will be for 15.10 as a deciding factor.

All I can advise is download the 32-bit version of Zorin 10 Core, check the md5sum matches with the downloaded iso, then burn using imgburn (download it from https://ninite.com to avoid getting garbage downloaded from imgburn.com and burn at slowest speed.

Keep us posted! :D

Can I still burn it to a USB through?

I don't see why not! :D

Quick question, while the iso file is downloading (its taking a while), I went to this link http://zorin-os.com/upgradeguide.html. So on step 4 do I do this from Linux? Just to be sure, thank you!

Hi,

you can follow this guide if you already have Zorin OS installed:

I'm having trouble with this one. Which Ext4 do I pick to place my "root" ( / )? I have two partitions with Zorin 9

Hi,

I would use the partition with the least MB usage (not the swap partition!), so go with using sda7 for root ( / ) and sda5 for your home ( /home ).

The upgrade was a no-go. The bar is still on the right hand side of the screen and the driver did not want to install from the software store...

Hi,

if you have nothing installed, start from the beginning using the partition guide link I posted earlier!. :D Resize/reset your partitions to your liking and then try installing again!.
