apt-get update missing files

Acer DeVille

Yes, I am back. I know, I know you thought you had finally got lucky enough to get rid of me for good. I had to go and use the flashy eye-candy distro's, like KDE, and Trinity. Until I got tired of all that extra bs, you know when it stopped looking good, and just got in the way. So I just installed Z-10, from an .iso (usb) I downloaded from the Zorin download page.

Every time I try a apt-get update, a terminal install, or even a synaptic or software center install, it always ends with the same error msg

"Err http://ppa.launchpad.net vivid/main amd64 Packages
404 Not Found
Err http://ppa.launchpad.net vivid/main i386 Packages
404 Not Found
Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net vivid/main Translation-en_US
Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net vivid/main Translation-en
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/pp ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/pp ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

Before this error msg however it would tell me I have duplicated repo's. The first thing I did was write down the offending repositories and such, and then opened synaptic>>repositories, to fix them, but none of the offending repo's were even listed in the repo list. I have tried the "apt-get -f install", and all the other "fixes" I have been able to find by a Google search (ubuntu type forums). (the duplicate repo errors are corrected, somehow. I've been working on it a little at a time and that was a couple weeks ago, I remember working on it, but I've forgotten exactly what I did)

No matter what I do to correct the issue, it either just fails, or the item it says to delete, doesn't exist to start with. I am at my wits end. I have used Zorin off and on since Z-5 I think, and I've never had this problem, this bad. I've ran into this problem with just about every Linux distro I've used, when you first install but usually it's easy to fix, but not this time. As I said my biggest problem in finding a solution is the repo's that are listed as a problem, don't even exist in the list.

When doing "gksudo ********/sources.list, this is my entire sources list

"deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu vivid main universe restricted multiverse"

I'm sure this has something to do with it, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

Thank you for once again coming to my rescue. I don't understand why even though Zorin is the simplist distro (that I've used), it's the hardest for me to work with, the more complicated the distro the easier I can manipulate it, and correct errors. But as much as I enjoy my eye-candy (and not just with an OS lol), that stuff gets old.

Hi AD and welcome back!.

try changing your "Download from" settings and see if that helps, it should be set to "Main server", if that doesn't work, select a different server, this might help you as I am using Z10 and the only problem I have is with duplicate PPA's which I cannot seem to get rid of?:

Also go to Menu | System Tools | Administration | Software Updater and after it has finished, click on the 'Settings' Button and go to the second tab which should list all your sources - uncheck the duplicates there.

;) :D

So I'm not the only one, that makes me feel better.

Does this help guys?:

I have used this on other Ubuntu forks and it works very well - let me know if it installs to Zorin 10 ok. ;) :D

Hi,

I don't think that "Superkey" will work with Zorin but I am not going to try the link you posted Swarf as I can live with the problem which seems to have subsided since recent updates anyway, providing people follow the guidelines about update settings!:

Hi Wolfman, I think that reference is down to the fact it was written (the instruction) for KDE users - all you need to do is open a terminal and enter:

Code:
y-ppa-manager

You could also create a shortcut using the same method I did for scangear for the Canon Printer in use! ;) :D

Swarf, (hope that's ok), I have to install it the "y-ppa-manager". I don't know if it's supposed to be installed already or what but I don't have it if it is. If it is, do I need to fill out a bug report or something?

Hi Acer, you have to install it as per that link instructions:

Basically in a terminal copy and paste these commands:

1.
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager -y

then with the terminal still open:

2.
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install y-ppa-manager -y

then after it has finished updating, leaving the terminal open:

3.
Code:
y-ppa-manager

When (if? ) it launches it should look something like this:

maybe I misunderstood Swarf's post, I thought he meant it was pre-installed as part of Z10. I did get it installed, and it did search and manage and stuff, but I still have two ppa's for AWN that "update" can not find, however they do not show up in my sources.list, or anywhere else. I tried to use ppa-purge to remove them, they don't exist on my .list. (see terminal output of "update")

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/pp ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/pp ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found

robby@robby-zorin:~$ sudo add-apt repository purge http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/pp ... 4/Packages
sudo: add-apt: command not found
robby@robby-zorin:~$ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

ppa-purge is already the newest version.
ppa-purge set to manually installed.

So how do I remove something that can't be found? (bang forehead on desk) lol.

Now, y-ppa-manager/manage ppa's does list awn-testing/vivid as an empty ppa, clicking on "purge" a terminal window opens, and it works for a short time and then says, "ppa can't be found". After clicking on "remove" I get a message saying it was successfully removed, however after closing and reopening y-ppa, it is still listed and doing an update command I get,

Do I need to re-add the repo, or is this just a bug that has to be worked on upstream, or what now?

Hi, I suspect it is because Zorin must have used the testing ppa when they included the latest 'AWN' panel with the release of 10 - Wolfman appears to have reported that it went away after an update - please be sure that your sources for software updates are set to 'Main Server'. Because Ubuntu does not use AWN by default, I suspect that could be why it is throwing up errors - same as if you install the last available Linux version of Opera. ;) :D

Hi AD,

try changing the download location and select a different server and try again, it may be that the servers are out of sync?:
