No sound-Complete Linux/Zorin Newb

After playing with the live version and noticing a lot of bugs and drivers not working, I decided to just go ahead and install Zorin 64 bit ultimate from Live. After installing all updates and getting my graphics drivers working, I have still yet to figure out how to get my sound to work. I've played around with the sound manager's and everything is unmuted, all sound is turned up, and even when testing the sound for my headphones, I can hear the little beep noise its suppose to make. HOWEVER, I can't hear anything else like when watching youtube videos or any sound really.

What am I suppose to do from here? Im pretty sure Zorin is capable of running the onboard sound card of my MSI 970A Motherboard, but its just not doing it.

I'm trying to be patient for a response. Also, if you need more information regarding my system Specs, please ask.

Thanks.

I recommend:

Using Zorin OS Core 3.1 which is based on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, which is a Long Term Support aka "more stable with longer support" version...and... also using the 32-bit vs. the 64-bit versions, because 32-bit is has better support and also less issues than 32-bit does. Flash, for example, has issues in 64-bit versions of Linux,

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ore-32.iso

Try that first.

Hi! thanks for the replies Zorin team/ members. However, I was able to get the sound to work :D. I'm not entirely sure what I did but I played around a lot with the "hardware" tab under system/preferences/sound and after trying every combination with "profiles" with the three audio devices detected, (which were: Audio Adapter; Internal Audio; and Juniper HDMI Audio [Radeon 5700 series]) I was able to get my sound to work.

Thanks again though for the feedback, I'm just happy i figured it out on my own.

I will be posting another topic soon though (unless you answer the questions in this thread), probably several topics because I'm having difficulty with:

1), Updating PlayonLinux (the whole sudo apt-get install playonlinux command in terminal Doesnt update me from v3.8.12 to v4.0.12} and

2), Getting Starcraft ii to install properly from the Retail CD. I have read the tutorials for mounting and umounting the cdrom to make it read, but that still hasnt quite fixed the problem. PLUS im using an ATI graphics card which seems to universally have problems with linux OS's in general.

Please respond here letting me know If I should make a new thread or if you can answer the questions here :)

On this tab by default you should see 'Analogue Stereo Duplex' - if after 'Test Speakers' there is still no sound - don't be confused by the smilies by the way - it does NOT indicate the sound is working, use the drop down arrow to the right of 'Analogue Stereo Duplex' and choose a different profile - you might have to test each one in turn by using 'Test Speakers'.

Just now realized this is kinda what I did, but I did it with sheer luck, Thanks again though!

This may be slightly off-topic, but I personally avoid AMD and ATI preferring Intel and Nvidia since they have better support. Since Zorin OS is based on Linux, check out this site: http://linuxhcl.com/

This is Exactly on topic with my question #2! Although I didnt need to use this page, this lead me to rabbit trail further into the ubuntu wiki (dunno how i ended up there) but I found some interesting info on how to manually install Ati drivers.

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide

HOWEVER, half way through me going through this process, I suddenly realized that this is mainly intended for ubuntu/intrepid. Will this completely screw me up if im already at the "Install .debs" part?

Also when I DID try to install the .debs using the step by step terminal commands, I was spit out these errors:

dpkg: error processing xorg-driver-fglrx_8.602-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing fglrx-kernel-source_8.602-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb (--install):

fglrx-amdcccle_8.602-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

so.... Yeah, upon seeing this, I then realized this was for the 8.0 version so now i have created these .debs and dont know what to do with them.

More help please?

I seem to always find the answers myself right after I post.. Oh me.

Anyhow, MODERATORS AND DEV of ZORIN, I think it would be most beneficial if you posted this link in a sticky thread for people with ATI cards:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide

Not exactly Zorin, but its the closest thing to zorin it seems.

Hope I am of some help!

If you run Zorin OS 3.1, that's based on Lucid / 10.04, so change Intrepid to Lucid like so:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide

If you run Zorin OS 4, that's based on 10.10 / Maverick, thus:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide

If you run Zorin OS 5.0/5.1, that's based on 10.10 / Natty, thus:

From the time I first posted in this forum all the way to this post, i've learned QUITE alot...
I've done 6 full re-installations of Zorin OS because of screw ups on my part with the drivers for ATI cards so NOW I have a nVidia gtx 550 TI card.

Ive got the sound to work, I've gotta starcraft II to play (YAY!) i've learned how to use the terminal a lot more now also.
However, A new problem is posing for me for nVidia drivers. it goes as follows:

So after I got STarcraft II to run and work, I noticed that graphics that i could easily run on my old pc in windows with a 450 gtx card for starcraft II were MUCH better than the 550 card, which is very hard to believe. What i use to run on my old PC that gave me about 50 FPS now only gives me 10 FPS (same settings) so something isnt right

I decided to do a test using my little brothers GTS 250 nvidia card (obviously lower grade). After installing it into my system and using the drivers recommended for it, I ran SCII and had the exact same FPS as with my GTX 550 (Wtf)?

After searching through many forums, I realized that the version recommended through "Additional Drivers" is version 270.something.something.
however, there is another version out there called version 280.13 which supports my card (great! an update!) so after purging my system of the old drivers, i then used the exact instructions to install this new driver from:

http://xbmcmediacenter.com/linux-nvidia ... s-updated/

After following the instructions, I then rebooted my PC and went to load to desktop and.... Nothing.
Actually, it never made it there. It went to a black screen with a non-blinking __ on it and just stayed there.

So what do I do? I KNOW for a fact this card can easily give me above 40 FPS on the ultra settings for this game, even the nVidia site says this thing can bust it out the park
(see http://www.geforce.com/Hardware/GPUs/ge ... 550-Ti-OPS )
So my main question now is, Is there a site I should be downloading this driver from?(280.13) and also, what have I done wrong?

I guess i should note my system Specs also:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz
MSI 970A-G45 motherboard
700W ocz PSU
GeForce GTX 550 TI
2x 4 gigs Ripsaw Gskill 1600 DDR3 ram
1T WD Harddrive

I think we're on 3 differ pages here. My graphics card is a GTX 550 TI, which is a mid-high end card for nvidia. A 5700 FX will defiantly NOT have the same drivers as my card, nor will nouveau do anything for me except bog this card of mine down. The proprietary driver is version 270.something, however, there is a more current driver that will help this card out some from the ubunto repository page f(PPA page). Hell, even Nvidia recommends the driver 280.14 for the nvidia GTX 550 TI for linux 64bit. So my question is:

How do I install this 280.14 driver when purging my system of the old driver and installing from the ubuntu repository doesnt work?

Steve,

I would recommend you change the download location for your updates, then I would remove the Nvidia drivers using the Hardware Drivers manager, after that; I would re-install the Nvidia drivers using the recommended package!!.

Wolfman,

As much as I would love to just use the proprietary drivers, it kills me to know that my gaming rig I built ground up off newegg for a smart $700 cost is giving me the performance of a office PC when it comes to games. It saddens me that I'm having to re-think my OS choice back to Win7 just because my games run poorly on a Linux distro, I feel I should have more reason to switch back then that (If it ever comes to that). I'm hoping I find some work around, I've spent countless hours trying to set this up to work. I got all the way to installing the nvidia driver from there own site using there walkthough method of shutting down the X server and blacklisting Nouveau, but when everything was complete, said and done, I reboot to find nothing but a black screen due to EE: Nvidia - failure to load nvidia kernal module (something like that, mainly incorrect mis-match of the nvidia kernal and driver). Although the proprietary driver works, It doesnt give anywhere near the performance this video card can give.

As for swarfendor,

I used this guide and followed it to a T, however I had no luck after it fully installed :( I guess ill just have to do a system purge and reload with the recommended drivers..

Honestly, you'd be better off leaving your system as it is with Linux and using that for everything EXCEPT Gaming. For Gaming, I'd just build or buy a new PC with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. Linux seriously lacks in the Gaming department. For Gaming, and only for Gaming and nothing else, I'd use a Windows box.

Aint that the truth Obsidian.

Yeah.. I might just run a dual boot. Have all my gaming Apps on windows and everything else on here. Zorin is just soooooo much easier and faster than windows, its unbelievable how awesome it is once you learn the basics.
But as far as my gaming needs, gonna have to have that Breakable Windows.

Hi Steve,

I actually took Win7 off of my home PC because it was doing my brain in, my intention was just to play games on my notebook but I just couldn't get along with the smaller screen and keyboard. I re-installed W7 in dual boot mode and just use it to play games, it doesn't hurt if you have lots of space.

As far as gaming under Linux goes; well it isn't the bee's knees and having Windows side by side is not so tragic, it could also prove useful if Linux ever crashes!!.

Regarding dual booting...................

Red Hat Engineer Calls out Windows 8 Secure Boot as a Linux Risk
By Sean Michael Kerner
September 21, 2011

From the 'GRUB Killer' files...

Red Hat developer Matthew Garrett has discovered a potential Linux killing feature in Windows 8.

Microsoft's next major OS is set include a secure boot. The system will prevent any executable from loading unless they are signed by a specific set of keys. The problem with that is non-key signed executable - say Linux - might not be able to put on a piece of hardware that has been built for Windows.

That's a problem.

Many of us, (myself included) have hardware that was originally running Windows (the so-called Microsoft tax). That hardware has since been re-imaged or dual-booted to load something else, namely Linux.

The Windows 8 secure boot process could potentially eliminate that ability on new hardware.

"Microsoft requires that machines conforming to the Windows 8 logo program and running a client version of Windows 8 ship with secure boot enabled," Garrett blogged. "A system that ships with only OEM and Microsoft keys will not boot a generic copy of Linux."

That said Garrett added that, "there's no indication that Microsoft will prevent vendors from providing firmware support for disabling this feature and running unsigned code."

In my view there are a few potential solutions to this issue:

1) Buy bare metal. If you buy a bare metal machine without the Microsoft tax than this isn't going to be an issue.

2) Grub replacement. As it stands Grub would likely not work under a strict interpretation of Microsoft's safe bootloader approach, that said, when something doesn't work in open source, there is an 'itch to scratch' and history has shown as that itches don't get left unscratched for long.

3) It won't happen with small vendors. Big vendors like Dell, HP and Lenovo are likely to preload and be part of this program. Smaller vendors that pre-load on site likely won't and will find their own workarounds too.

4) Virtualize. No this is not an ideal solution...but, if the secure boot can be linked to say Hyper-V (i know...),easy enough to run Linux virtualized.

None of these solutions are ideal and the Windows 8 secure boot could be a real problem. The good news is that developers like Matthew Garrett are watching. Microsoft isn't going to surprise anyone this time.

Hi Steve,

your problem may simply lie in the Hardware list of the sound preferences menu, take a look at the hardware devices listed and make sure the correct one is marked!!!.

Sometimes I have the same problem to, but it usually works after I re start the computer.
I honestly don't think Zorin is stable enough to be a total replacement operating system (if that was your intention, it was for me) might go back to Linux Mint

yes, i think so. i believe the movie and music even plays with whatever player i used its just that i cannot hear any sound, the problem might be on the driver. i search google for troubleshooting the drivers but havent found any.
