Every Ubuntu distro I've tried had to be modified to enable my Epson Perfection 1650.
All that is need is to get root privileges, go to the dll.conf file under etc/sane.d and remark out the second epson reference and undo it for the first. Probably you could eliminate the second one altogether but I leave it in place to see if an update puts one back in. Mine always looks like:
I switch it around and it works every time! I do have an Epson printer but I don't believe that causes the problem, as I've tried leaving it off during installs with the same results.
