Here are some benchmark data of installing Zorin 8 Core and Zorin 8 Lite as full install to a USB Flash Drive. In the following link there is a wide speed test database of the available, tested alternatives.

The situation on the market is that superfast USB 3.0 drives are available but often only in the new computers there is a USB 3.0 port. Even if so, when having only USB 2.0 ports, selecting a drive for full install, a USB 3.0 specified drive should preferably be used to get a speed level that satisfies the computer user's requirement or that the installation works overall. However sometimes it is a better alternative to use a small sized USB 2.0 spec. drive. In laptops a small sized drive ie. the 16 Gb SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB 2.0 drive is fast enough (read speed ca. 23 Mb/s) to run Zorin 8 Lite there. It is more convenient when plugged on the side of the laptop than using a big/long sized USB device.

An other usable and very reasonably priced drive I used for the desktop to make Zorin 8 Core installations is 16Gb Transcend Jet Flash 760 USB 3.0 drive with its specified 75 Mb/s read and 12 Mb/s write speeds.( R/W test results even better 80/26 Mb/s). A good alternative for this is the new 16 or 32 Gb Kingston Data Travel DTIG4 with same speed spec.(R/W test results for 32 Gb drive 77/32 Mb/s).
Achieved boot times with these USB selections are 50 sec. for Zorin 8 Lite in the HP 530 (Celeron M 32 bit, 1,86 GHz, 2 Gb RAM) laptop and 1,5 min. for Zorin 8 Core in desktop (ASUS AMD Athlon Dual Core 4000+, 64 Bit, 2,1 GHz, 2 Gb RAM). As a reference Windows 7 Ultimate boots from internal HDD little faster ca. 1min. 15 sec.
I also made some other speed tests starting Gimb with a 5 Mb picture and it opened in laptop in ca. 5 sec. file from an other 32 Gb Kingston DataTraveler 100 USB 3.0 drive and in desktop ca. 6 sec. file from an ext. 500 Gb Buffalo HDD connected also to an USB 2.0 port.
Starting Libre Office Writer with 5 Mb text document including pictures, started in ca. 3 to 4 seconds. Additionally a 1.5 Mb .pdf file opens with "Document viewer" in 1.sec. Also measured from both computers.
All these tests include both starting the application software and opening the file from an external memory device connected to an USB2.0 port. These tests shows that a high speed USB 2.0 specified drive can be used for Zorin 8 Lite and a reasonably priced USB 3.0 drive having some additional speed for heavier os.es like Zorin 8 Core. With these selections both, boot, starting and file launching times are short enough and almost the same as having the os. installed to the internal HDD drive. The unacceptable slow speed of os. is according these tests related to poor speed performance of the USB drive, less tan 20 Mb/s read speed. Not only to the lack of an USB 3.0 connection in the computer. In most cases selecting a faster USB 3.0 specified drive solves the speed problem.

1. Boot times are measured from pushing the "power on" button, until to the normal "desktop is launched and accessible" with all panel items and net wifi autoconnected. So it includes the start of BIOS and selection of boot device (USB) there and the password typing.
2. Applications' start times include time from starting the opening of the selected file with command "Open with ...." until the application software starts and opens the file to the desktop ready to be accessed.
