In Zorin 9
Answer: DON'T install the proprietary driver!
That's right. I wouldn't have believed it myself without testing it. The stock Xorg driver runs MUCH better than the proprietary driver in Zorin 9. I have the Radeon 7770 (HIS brand) myself. The first thing I would do (and always have done) after the OS install is to install the proprietary driver. I did this and noticed odd lockups, games like Portal (Steam) really ran like garbage and so on. So, I tried Zorin 9 without any proprietary driver just for the heck of it. Unbelievable. EVerything runs as smooth as silk. Games play perfectly (Portal, Portal 2, Half Life, and more), hardware acceleration is perfect. I have to ask...WHEN did I miss the fact that the default drivers matured to such a point that they are more useful than the proprietary drivers? I am not complaining mind you. It is a relief to NOT have to install them. Just a heads up. It may be the same for other ATI cards, but I can say for sure that the 7770 card is awesome in Zorin 9!
