I suggest the following changes to the final release:

All those menu items in "System Tools/Preferences" could be removed which are in the "System Settings" window here:

Preferences.png

That makes the "Preferences" menu simpler and shorter and avoids overlapping menus. 15 items is max. not needing a scroll bar. Now there is 28 items of which 15 are the same as in "System Settings" window.

Other changes to applications software. In the "Graphics" there could be a good vector graphic tool, preferably "Inkscape" installed. In the "Sound and Video" could be "VLC" video player added.

What I looked the "Tweak Tool" is removed. This kind of windows theme changes are not so easy to get done any more, differing from "Light Theme" using that tool. Personally I like little colored windows' backgrounds and boarders more than just white.

System Settings.png

One question is whether that "install" window in the start of live sessions is really needed to be there. It only stops the loading unnessesarily when going to live session. There is the icon on the desktop and the boot option in the beginning already to go to live session or to installation. Just to avoid overlapping here also.

You have to bear in mind this is a Release Candidate! If you have been following the Ubuntu 14.04 saga you will have noted all the bugs that are present too! :D

As to overlap - this is good as it reduces the endless searching for 'what is where' in the new desktop - those used to 'menu driven' OS's will find it easier than:

Menu | System Tools | System Settings ;)

VLC and InkScape are usually provided in the 'UItimate Editions' - for me personally, SMPlayer and SMTube should be the de-facto media player.

I would have liked Clementine to be the default Audio Player. http://vimeo.com/63678606

The Zorin Blue Scheme looks nice but suffers in the same way that Zorin Dark does.

In the absence of 'Tweak Tool' you need to install 'Ubuntu Tweak' but I don't know where it stands at the moment in relation to Ubuntu 14.04.

What install window? :?

Borders and shadows are controlled by CompizConfig Settings Manager - and you can also install 'gnome-color-chooser' to get wider scroll bars! :D

The new Zorin logo, which is nice

New logo.jpg

could be added to the iStart icon gallery to be used instead of Ubuntu icon when Zorin 9 is released.

One correction to Swarfendor's post. To the "Systems Settings" can get just opening the "Control Panel", no need to go via Menu / System Tool / System Settings. It is easy as can be. ;) The problem is that there are different names to the same thing, messing up even more the user. Why not rename the "Control Panel" to "System Settings" so it would be clear. ( I believe that this menu has been made more for former Windows users, there is "Control Panel"). That "what is where" can not be solved by putting "everything everywhere" even using different names of same things. There should be just better overall structure which is hard to get to a Linux os. distro due to it always is a collection of different pieces of independently made software.

I have handled this kind of problems allready earlier in this viewtopic:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6920

To say also some positive things of the first hours of using it from a USBlive, so all I have used here works well in desktop and laptop and it was easy to install. It looks familiar to me using Zorin 8 until now. I feel that this distro is also more stable than what Zorin 8 was when I installed it first time. Only internal wifi did not work out of the box with my laptop but two lines of "sudo" brought it to life. :D

To answer your question concerning the [Menu ].
I would think it would be do to the [ Zorin Desktop Changer ] !!!!
That's only my opinion...not a fact of the matter.
I haven't fiddled around with changing things in [ Zorin Menu ].
Do...that it has never bothered me...[ myself ].
One used to be able to uncheck items in the [ Menu Editor ] in order to remove the [ Items ] from [ Zorin Menu ].
I seriously doubt [ Zorin Group ] will ever change the location of the said items in [ Zorin Menu ].
One will never know unless the subject is brought up to their attention.

I do not know any reason why these 15 items from "system settings" are there, and few more additionally in some other menus. I just noticed that, as can be seen from my first screenshot where the "Preferences" menu is open, that of those 15 items 10 can be seen there installed on purpose or not. However, that is now a known issue to the developers from this feedback to do something if they want. Personally I would remove them, but there are also opposite opinions of that. (May be that it is some type of "bug" also).

Peculiar thing here is that I always try to do something that does not work even if it should. I can get rid of those what I want to keep there. But all what I want to get rid of stays there stubbornly.

We have not common understanding with this software what should be done.

Subject [ Zorin Theme Changer ]

The [ Zorin Theme Changer ] is a good idea as part of [ Zorin OS ] !!!!
But.....but it isn't to practical for the majority...if one can't [ incorporate ] their own [ GTK Theme ] to the [ Theme Changer ] itself.

Suggestion : [ Add > install/remove capabilities to the [ Theme Changer ]

Totally agree - there should be someway of allowing some 'Themes' from 'gnome-look.org'

Even though the video is in [ French ].... anyone can still follow through the video to get a close visual of the new release.
Congratulations on the video...job well done.

Can't seem to run Zorin OS 9 RC on my laptop which is in my signature below, which sports a core 2 duo processor 2.33Mhz. nouveau/xorg and compbiz errors....can't idle down 0xcccc0000 & 0xcccc0001. This is having to do with my video card or graphics: Nvidia Quadro NVS120/256MB.

I'm seeing more and more that these newer distro's coming out are not geared toward older systems....we're slowly being squeezed out...

example of messages:

624.441763 nouveau E[ DRM ] GPU Lockup-switching to fbcon
nouveau E[XORG 6254] failed to idle channel 0xcccc0000 [xorg 6254]]

Also same types of messages for compbiz as well......then after a few minutes of these messages, picture or desltop colors are garbled/scrambled, then just bounces back and forth between the two....messages and garbled desktop colors...

Hi Andrew, I am suspecting that if my memory serves me correctly, the RC was a 'pae' version which caters for the 'ix' series of Intel processors - let's hope they release a generic kernel in the final release! Have you checked if Ubuntu 14.04 runs in live mode on your Notebook?

I'm in Ubuntu 14.04LTS right now, while typing this, so, this is evidence enought that there is a slight flaw in the development in ZORINOS 9 RC.....I get as far as the screen where you have the choice of install and trying it out, after that, that's where the error codes that I posted earlier come into play. I know you all do very good and hard work in the development of your OS, but I think you overlooked something while putting it all together.....BTW, I've run PAE on my laptop before and had no problems......how soon before OS 8 core goes EOL....

Hi Andrew, Firstly for clarity I am NOT a developer - just a desktop user with a bit of experience of various flavours of GNU/Linux. All I can say is that I hope the Zorin brothers do take note of your post and can rectify it.

In respect of Zorin 8 - 17th July - just around the corner - just like Ubuntu 13.10 on which it is based. ;)

Andrew

Sun Jul 06, 2014 5:01:24 pm

I apologize for that...didn't mean to imply that you were a developer, but I do know they put a lot of hard work and effort into these OS's.....I hope they see this as well, cause I really like Zorin and 9 looks like a great one....especially being an LTS....thank you for your quick response

Andrew

Tue Jul 08, 2014 12:33:58 pm

Has anyone heard from any of the devs on this to see if they've made any changes to the ISO's......I'd really like to run this on my laptop and check it out for myself......I really like Zorin OS....so far, it's the most stable of all distro's I've used.....thanks guys ;)

Andrew

A Thought:

If one can burn and boot up to or into Ubuntu 14.04 LTS without issue, what was done differently or taken out when Zorin OS 9 RC was subsequently put together. Shouldn't whatever was in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS been used so that everyone could enjoy this new OS version of Zorin.....I would think so, as I would love to use this on my laptop. Cheers :D

When doing a live boot off a DVD, the system loads and when you click on the "Try" option it loads and then freezes. The mouse and keyboard no longer function..... runs fine on Zorin 8. Anyone else had this problem and found a way to make it work?
7/17/2004: ok, got it to work by using options before it booted the system. Was able to install the "ultimate" version, then change the driver for my screen. It took some work, but now works find. I had the same problem with several Ubuntu versions when trying the live cd for 14.04. At least it is fixed, although I find no real reason to upgrade from 6 ultimate to 9. As much as I like it, I can find no real reason to upgrade it at all as long as you can get security updates etc. I do support Zorin with donations because I want to support the hard work they put into it and I personally consider it to be the best distribution available. But I realize it is a personal thing and others have their favorites. Keep up the fine work and thank you very much.

OK currently been running live - hoping to do videos of dual boot installs soon. Just trying the 'Zorin Background Plus' and getting occasional 'white flashes' - could be down to nvidia graphics.

Bit concerned on the lock down on firefox Home Page that a forumer has raised. Still no binding of Windows key to Menu - will see if it is possible to install GnoMenu after install and see if I can get that to work. I do wish that the other applets were available for awn to remove the inidicator 3 applet on far right! But again I will do some tweaking and video it with Kazam to see how I get on. I do hope the Window decorations won't be disappearing often as some have reported elselwhere in Help and Support!

Downloaded, burn DVD of the final Zorin OS 9....still having the same issues with DRM, GPU lockup, nouveau xorg & combiz failure to idle channel + the same issues that Bob Montgomery is having with mouse and keybard lock up as well....sad that I can boot up and try Ubuntu 14.04LTS live DVD without issues, but I can't use or try the new Zorin OS 9 or the RC :(

Andrew

Firstly do a clean install

Use [Nomodeset ] when installing ZOS9.
When finished...don't update.
Install Nvidia 304.17 [ Nvidia Drivers ] first.
From ( Additional drivers )
Reboot
Then do your update.

If needed

: sudo apt-get install grub
: sudo update-grub
: reboot

Helps with the grobbly boot text.

Hope it works for ya

Well, I'm happy to say :D that I'm currently inside of Zorin OS 9 LTS-64bit, fully installed and after following the guides from AZorin, which by the way were somewhat along the same lines as yours Gizmuntu......everything is working great.....only thing is, I miss the tweak tool that was in OS 6.4 and 8.....worked great for changing the systems fonts and such....don't have the cpu sensors in the AWN settings panel like before either.....oh well....these were the guides from AZorin:

In order to boot the Zorin OS 9 please try following these steps:
Insert the LiveDVD/USB and restart your computer to boot Zorin OS.
When you see the cyan screen with the two icons at the bottom please press any key and you should see a boot menu. Press F6 and select nomodeset. In the main menu highlight the "Try Zorin OS without installing" option and press enter. You should be able to boot into the Live system.

After installing Zorin OS to your computer you will need to restart the machine (without the DVD/USB in the drive) and enter the Advanced options in the boot menu (before booting Zorin OS from your computer's HDD) and follow this guide: http://askubuntu.com/a/38834/68544
This will allow you to install the proprietary NVidia drivers from the Internet which should permanently fix the issue. To install them go to Start > Search & open "Additional Drivers" and activate the newest graphics driver before rebooting.

Just discovered this little trick in Gnome DE (With Effects):

Ctrl+ Alt+ Tab in Gnome.jpg

Which means you can switch to Background Plus (xwinwrap) and back to Desktop without shutting down Background Plus! :D

In India, the internet speed to slow & people dont have permanent internet speed...thats why people hesitate to install linux.. zorin made easy for people to migrate..but still linux including zorin lack just a substitute of .exe file... I tried install .deb files but those gives some dependencies error when we are offline...so instead of focus on improving look, linux team should focus on basic functionality of installing softwares easy (without any dependencies error or any other problem)... Just to install vlc..you should have fast internet on your pc..or laptop...(vlc team dont give .deb file) & many other teams dont give even .deb file Now coming to specific zorin os: 1) It must have vlc out of box..rhythmbox is great when i compared resources they used...but it dont have 16:10 aspect ratio (& many more that vlc offers) & vlc is easy to use for many more people as they are used to it.. 2) Libre office is great but you dont included libre math package preinstalled out of the box..that is must...& i like WPS (formerly kingsoft office) more easy to use for a microsoft office user..So instead of libre office, WPS should come preinstalled... 3) Its better for a zorin team to give customised .deb file so that we can install software in offline pc also... 4) Google chrome should come preinstalled...

Zorin 9 all the bugs from Zorin 8 disappeared it looks like. No more AWN completely stuck (and I don't even know yet how to restart it), no more maximum 4 files opened in GIMP otherwise AWN crashes etc...

Few little bugs which were quickly resolved.
Maybe a little slower to start but it's still awesome.

Well I'm happy with it !

PS : dunno where to suggest that, but Hedgewars should be installed automatically on Zorin because it's so fun and works very well on Zorin 9 (on Zorin 8 it had a bug)

Wish List
-less compatible but higher res capable generic display driver available from live cd
-copy to ram
-chrome instead of firefox since it can run 720p video flawlessly on generic display driver and the latter can't

Hii I'm speaking for Ultimate if I may do in here.. :geek:
I love Zorin and my favorite is the lite version..soooo smootth on 1 gig Ram.
Video editor Gimp maxthon browser everything can run at once with cairo dock, people can't belief it..it's my pleasure.

BUT this is about Ultimate
and I think it's OK very stable..BUT there are things disturbing me, like the mount and unmount for USB/externals.
It should not disapear after unmounting...it should still be visible as every other disk..so I can remount it .
KDE does this very good only there, the side panel is to crowdet.
I have 9 visible windows partition, which Zorin is handling just great.
I also do love that I can open every hidden and system admin file like system volume..
and common files ! and delete things easy, like I could never do in windows itself! Aswel those stupid "dead" windows links..I can click my way through, when I'm on Zorin.
Damn I love that.

Another thing to say, the the onboard settings-should be listed under all settings too ..
All the tweaks should be visible in line there. . this makes it easier for new people..also KDE does that great.
KDE..OMG ..this is high..very high custom build. ..I only tried it today this early morning like 3 hr.
Still I prefer Zorin cause KDE was a little unpredictable sometimes ..call it buggy.

I'm 3 month now on Zorin. When I first heard the name I thought is has potencal that's why I invested the 10 euro..
I will gladly donate more when i got a little extra.
When I found Zorin I just spendet money for antivirus the new emsisoft (does not slow down pc at all)
and east-tec eraser..and so on,I have a lot of tools installed. only to keep windows smooth (very time consuming too).
But tools which I need to work with are installed on a portable stick.
Still Windows 8.1 (I'm running it for 4 month now) The system used 40 GB just for it selv, and I can't stop it.
But I liked it better than win 7 ...Than Zorin came around and really impressed me.
.. not because it's more like windows..this is the least I await from Linux. or Zorin..but compatibility, smoothness,
It' a fast package
one more thing! Ultimate should have the "dconf editor" installed already..to turn desktop icons off..it took me a long time to figure that..
cause on Zorin light it is just under desktop preferences to find..so easy..I don't know if core has it..but Ultimate should have
and Core not

Now Windows is aiming on Holo now.
A small app of course and buggy for sure , a video which is following on a wall (who needs it )..
I believe Linux is the better OS for that..Not just that but real HOLO.

If I would have known the big changes after 2005 in Linux distros, I would have ditched this trash hole (windows)
years ago already.
:ugeek:

4) Google chrome should come preinstalled...

NOOO way, google stuff should never be preinstalled..firefox is fine !
BTW be glad that Linux is not going with exe files..cause they all get stuffed with pups...1 dollar per pup that's big money..
if you have enough of this on your computer...there will be no internet fast enough anymore..just mention..
think what is the smaller problem ?.
Linux should never become windows...nor google sorry mate :geek:

Yes i understand google chrome shouldn't come preinstalled but chromium should be there.
& i am not talking about direct support of exe file in linux but there should be an alternative to exe or dmg in linux through which we can install the desired software in one click or in single line without any internet connection & without dependencies problem

Hi,

if you download any .deb package (32/64 Bit, all.deb); you can install it using Gdebi!. Only download .deb packages if you can!.

See the post install guide and this section: "Tweak Tools and single package manager: Which includes Dconf-Editor, Tweak Tool (AKA: Advanced Settings), Ubuntu Tweak and Gdebi ":

OK, not had issues with LPR printing on the now dying i865 - recently purchased an all-in-one that has multi ink tanks - Whilst I love Zorin as an OS I was concerned that it is struggling with the new MG7500 - sure I got the printer drivers installed which it has picked up but I have just installed using the same driver packages (allbeit from the Asia source but the same packages!) and installed on MakuluLinux 10 "Aero" Beta and the Printer works straight out of the box. If Zorin 10 fares better then I may be tempted to ditch the Long-Term Support version of Zorin if I can't print to the Pixma MG7550! :-(

I've been checking out the Mint distros, and while they're very nice, Zorin in my mind is superior. I settled on Mint Xfce. I like the minimalist DE. But Zorin is faster and smoother. When I get back on Zorin after spending time on Xfce, I immediately notice an improvement in my overall experience. I have to admit, I like the menu in Xfce. Very intuitive. No clicking, you just hover or scroll. but that is the only thing it has over Zorin. Zorin definitely is No. 1 for me. I think it always will be. Just feels like home.
