Problems installing Zorin 12.1 Lite

Good day Zorin community.

I want to install Zorin 12.1 Lite 32 bit on an old laptop.

I am trying to boot from a USB, after the boot splash animation, the laptop screen alternates between a blank screen and a blank screen with a blinking cursor. It does not proceed any further.

The specs of the machine are: Dell Latitiude D610, 1.6 GHZ CPU, 2GB RAM and an in-built Intel graphics card.

What is very strange is that the beta of Zorin 12.1 Lite Beta worked on it...what changed? I used Rufus VER 16 to create the bootable USB drive...

Can you still boot the Beta version? If so, you can try performing an upgrade to current version.

Good day mdiemer. No unfortunately not, when I try to boot using the Beta now it does the same thing as the problem I have mentioned...

Any ideas?

I'm no expert, but at this point I would consider reformatting the drive. I always use FAT 32. My machine is older, like yours, so FAT 32 should work. You may need to create a bootable CD to do this. A Macrium Rescue CD might do the job. Or you could try Clonezilla. Any rescue-type CD should allow you to format the drive. Doesn't matter if it's Windows or Linux. Then try installing Zorin again.

Just remembered it could be a PAE issue if your old machine cannot cope with that - worth a try?:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE

Also

Code: Select all
nomodeset, forcevesa
after the bootsplash command might work if you can get to that?

Thank you to everyone who responded.

So far no success... Despite trying the
Code: Select all
forcepae --forcepae
options and
Code: Select all
nomodeset, forcevesa
(maybe I have entered it wrong) The installer starts but then encounters a fatal error and then wants to exit and start the live portion which also fails. It is really strange as it worked before once on the beta vesion when it had just come out now it won't start at all even with it?

Assuming you have followed the advice from Zorin team here https://zorinos.com/help/install-zorin-os/
Does the machine still have a working OS on it and boot up OK?
Do you have another USB stick (some unbranded/generic ones can be ordinary) you can try? And/or create it with a different app such as Etcher? Or even try a different Distro EG Linux Mint!
Try removing the CD/DVD drive from the machine or disabling it in the BOIS. Alternatively Create bootable DVD and try that. Also try removing any other peripheral devices like mice etc!
Thats about all I can think of for now.

Thank you to Swarferndor437, MBMz10 and the rest of the Zorin Group Community.

I finally managed to get Zorin 12.1 Lite 32 bit to install. Now my next question is how to set the default resolution to 1024x768 or lower as it is struggling set to the default resolution of 1280x1024.

Thanks to you all.

Go to Settings/Display. You can change the resolution there. Or, if you have Nvidia or other proprietary graphics, use their tool.
