Touchpad settings are not available in Zorin OS 12.2 Core

Hi there,

On the Dutch Zorin forum there is a member who said that the touchpad settings are not available in Zorin OS 12.2 Core.
So today i open my own laptop to see if it is not a single case and to my surprise there is no touchpad settings only mouse settings are there.
Is this a bug in Zorin OS 12.2 Core?

Hi is touchpad functional? Don't forget, even in widows/bios touchpad is often referred to as a ps/2 mouse for some bizarre reason. Have you searched for 'touchpad' in Synaptic Package Manager?

Hi Swarfendor437,

Yes touchpad is functional, i mean i'm using it on the laptop.

On an early version of Zorin OS 12.1 (not 12.2) there we have the settings as shown in this picture:

Hi Hensyr, I need to download 12.2 Core at some stage to create unofficial manual for 12.x ;)

Hi Zorinantwerp.

How did you find the touchpad controls in Z12 Ultimate?

I've been looking for this for a while.

Finston, Hensyr is pointing out that the Touchpad settings were present in 12.1 but not in 12.2 - that screenshot is from 12.1. Just been looking in my archive images of synaptic - the driver used to be 1.83 which is no longer present in the repositories - current is 1.9.

My only suggestion is to see (NO GUARANTEES!) if installing the package I have highlighted helps:

Hi dear Swarfendor437,

I did installed the package you have highlighted but the settings are not back.

Hi Hensyr, there appears to be a problem albeit different in main Ubuntu. See if this thread helps? :

https://askubuntu.com/questions/762189/ ... -16-04-lts

In particular the reference to Gnome Shell extension. ;)

In that case - I couldn't even find the touchpad controls in Z12.1

and

its no wonder that I still can't find them in Z12.2

Are they coming back any time soon, I wonder?

It would help my laptop typing greatly if the touchpad was off as I type - so many unintended errors - I used to think I could no longer type!

I only want to disable the touchpad whilst typing

There are times when having the touchpad as a "backup" is useful - I had a bad experence once in loosing both mouse and touchpad.

So, for me, I will wait until the O/S (hopefully!) gives me this option.

I THINK I may have accidentally found the solution while grabbing images for the next sections of the unofficial manual in Gnome Tweak Tool Keyboard and Mouse!:

Thanks, Swarf.

So does this mean that "default" disables the touchpad, whilst typing, but otherwise leaves the touchpad active.

If so - it is just what I need.

I don't have a notebook to test it on at home - I would suggest 'None' - think it through - Click Method = None! :D

Thanks again, Swarf - but unsure which one would do what.

I want the touchpad on, except when typing - however, this does not seem to be an explicit option in Gnome Tweak Tool.

Done some more searching and found this:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... yYz0IpB3-I

The contents of 70-synaptics.conf file is as follows:

I'm unclear as to the link to the first article whether it is just a case of renaming the file to 50-synaptics conf! :?

The only other snippet of information I could find was here:

Thanks for the digging, Swarf.

BUT

A little too deep for me - I'll wait until the option to suspend touchpad whilst typing appears in the Zorin 12 O/S.

Hi Zorinantwerp.

What is Zorin Ultimate v.12? - it sounds like just what I am looking for - I am running Zorin Ultimate OS 12.2 64-bit as described by "Settings" > "Details".

Also, In which Menu did you type "touchpad"?

Thanks for the lead!

Hi zorinantwerp,

I would like to use that image in the Unofficial Manual for Zorin - where in the system did you get that image from - Settings or Tweak Tool?

Thanks. ;) :D

in menu/looking glass insert 'touchpad'
you arrive in option mouse/touchpad settings
click on touchpad option to have the appropriate settings

or in menu/administration/software
in looking glass type touchpad for install

OK, clearly that does not work for me as I don't have a notebook with Zorin 12 installed - only desktop with standard mouse - but is this normally in Settings under Moused and Touchpade? How did you install additional bits?

Hi Zorinantwerp

I have my laptop running Zorin Ultimate 12.2

You say:
"in menu/looking glass insert 'touchpad'
you arrive in option mouse/touchpad settings
click on touchpad option to have the appropriate settings"

Which "menu" is this? Are menu/looking glass the same thing?

I tried inserting "touchpad" above the blue "Z" - no joy

Where can it be?

Hi Finston

the problem with the menu popping up is that I cannot take a print screen
since I run a cinnamon flavour desktop perhaps your outlook might be different
Image
on top of the menu you have a search case (with a looking glass sign)

otherwise go directly to software and under 'all' find the setting to install

hope it helps :)

Thanks for the update, Zorinantwerp. I found the items in "software" - as you suggested.

Which of the two mouse and (&) touchpad packages enables the "deactivate touchpad whilst typing" feature? - it looks like it is "mouse and touchpad".

I had "mouse & touchpad" already installed.

I tried installing "mouse and touchpad" and the install failed.

Close - but no cigar!

Hi Finston, I finally found the location - if you notice you should already have the default one installed - I suspect you will need to remove the installed Gnome package and then install the one below it:

Thanks, Swarf.

It looks like you might loose some useful Gnome features if you uninstall "mouse & touchpad". Has anyone tried removing it I wonder?

Zorinantwerp, your screenshot showed both "mouse & touchpad" and "mouse and touchpad" installed - how did you achieve that?

Hi ZorinAntwerp,

Just wondered if you could lead me through how to get both features enabled - the same as you have.

Thanks in anticipation

I had the same issue. The settings for the touchpad were not showing up in the standard Mouse and Touchpad settings. I use both single touch click and scrolling on the touchpad and I really need these to work for me in order to call a distro - feature complete.

I found a work around, which did the trick beautifully. I hope it works for you. I am using a Dell Latitude E5570 and I installed Zorin 12.4 Ultimate. I opened the Software store and installed Welcome. From there I used it to launch a different control center app. Here are the steps:
- Open Software store
- Under category "System" (Other tab) select and install the Welcome app
- Once the Welcome app is installed, launch it directly from the Software store
- When the new window opens click on the "Getting Started" button
- On the next window click on the "Customization" button
- Under "Customization" select the "Control Center" button. This will launch a control panel, which is different from the default Zorin Settings panel
- A new window will pop up called "Control Center". Select the "Mouse" button
- When the next window pops up click the touchpad tab and select the "Enable horizontal scrolling" radio button
- If you are like me you may also want to select the "Enables mouse clicks with touchpad" radio button as well

Admittedly, it is a long work around. However, it worked for my Dell Latitude and I hope it works for you.
