Dual Boot Crash

XP REFUGEE

Sat Jul 28, 2018 5:25:40 pm

Hi All,

I have been running a dual boot Win 10/Zorin 12 Core Lenovo for about a year and a half now. I had a bit of a nightmare getting it set up, (DON’T CHECK THE ENCRYPT CHECK BOX!). Ultimately gave up and took to a local store to get it set up. He didn’t seem to be a Linux guy, but it’s been working well.

About a month ago I ran the software updater in Zorin and then booted into Win 10. It announced the version of 10 on the laptop was no longer supported, as of April 2018. Yea, I don’t do Windows very much. It wouldn’t let me do anything unless the update was completed, so the update was started. In the process it announced that it may need to restart several times. Upon reboot, this:

error: no such partition.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue> _

Please help,
XPR

Hi, it looks like who ever installed Core installed GRUB over the GPT of Windows 10 - not a good idea.

See if this can get your windows back up and running:

Can you boot into windows at all?

Upon power up it immediately goes to the grub rescue> prompt. No access to Windows. Bootsect comes back as an unknown command.

Hi, First off, do you have any critical data on your Zorin install you need to backup? If you do I would boot off your Zorin install media (you will need to go into the BIOS at boot time):

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Ide ... -p/3430972

Turn the Legacy boot option on or you will not be able to boot from Zorin Media.

Boot into live mode with your Zorin media after setting BIOS to boot in legacy mode and use a large capacity USB or external hard drive to backup any critical data.

To get your Windows 10 back (can't guarantee data but you should mount the Win10 partition once you have booted into live mode of Zorin and also extract any data valuable to you before following this guide:

Backup attempt. Nothing shows up in Files > Home. Screenshot attached. Please tell me all is not lost.

I'm afraid to say that unallocated indicates nothing is there at all. If you did have data on Zorin I can only suggest you try Test Disk to recover.

Hope you get something back. :(

You might be looking at something on the BIOS level, I had something similar (except my windows booted but it couldn't find Zorin) but have a look at this anyway, you might be able to get one of them back and then there are further things (from Swarf's 1st itsfoss link that can be tried)

Hi All,
I apologize for leaving this issue hanging. But, we had a water line fail in the house and that messed up three rooms and a hallway. So I have been distracted with other things.

The good news is that all the old files are still on the old xp machine and most of the new files were saved on thumb drives, although no rescue attempts have been made yet. Two smartphones and a tablet take some of the urgency off of the notebook repair.

I'm not sure when I will get back to this project, but I thank you for your help.
