So here is what is going on.

I will work on my Zorin box no issues all day. I walk away for the day come back the next day find all of my apps where closed. I check the uptime and the box didnt reboot.

I then ran the following command.

dmesg

this is the output
[164948.482291] Out of memory: Kill process 10811 (gnome-shell) score 575 or sacrifice child

my best guess is I ran out of memory and gnome-shell errored out. But I have 4gb of memory but the swap space the install made was small only 945mb.

I am open to any suggestions on how to fix this because this is getting annoying.

Hi, I always recommend the 'something else' for installation.

1. 30 Gb for '/' formatted to Ext4 - Primary Partition
2. Extended Partition - inside of the extended partition/Logical Partition I create the 'swap area/linux swap' and double the amount of RAM inside the machine so in your case that would be a swap area of 8192 Gb - everything in front of that formatted to Ext4 and marked '/home'

;) :D
