I have an Asus U31JG Laptop with the UVC webcam. With both Cheese and Skype I had video but it was upside down and standing on my head was not an option.... :D

I have done some searching and found the following to solve the problem.
Install through Synaptic: v4l2ucp + libwebcam0 + uvcdynctrl (including dependencies)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libv4l/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Restart

now Cheese will have correct video.
For Skype to have correct video edit the launcher like so:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.co skype

This is just useful information that I wanted to pass on.

Just an update.

Only need to do the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libv4l/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Restart

now Cheese will have correct video.
For Skype to have correct video edit the launcher like so:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.co skype

Hi evalyne,

have you tried what is suggested above by yehudah??.

If you have further problems, please post again!!.

Regards Woflman :D

PS: If you are using Skype, don't let it control the audio settings for pulse otherwise it will go stumm on you!!.
