After updating my kernel the sound got messed up and i could only see the dummy audio, i have noticed the same behavior with

amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-5.3.0-42-generic 5.3.0-42.34~18.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-5.3.0-45-generic 5.3.0-45.37~18.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04 5.3.0.45.101 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image

after that i manually switched to 5.3.0-40-generic and sound works perfectly fine,

Did anyone else faced the same issue after upgrade.

No problems here and I've had a troublesome Soundblaster until the last update prior to current - I had to boot twice before getting sound! I would advise rolling back to earlier kernel if this is the issue and prevent updates to kernel:

The only sound issues I've had over the last week, was due to my Fiio A5-Amp stop supplying sound to my headphones. I'm not sure why it was doing that, but simply turning it off and on again fixed it. Again, I believe unrelated in this case since the Fiio amp is an actual piece of hardware, and not part of the OS.

I have also incurred sound problems in the past resulting after a kernel update. You can view my story here:
