Laptop not always shutting down

This is a very minor annoyance as opposed to being a real problem. I'm positive this isn't strictly a Zorin hiccup. It first occurred about 4 months or so ago on both my laptop and on my wife's laptop as well and that was prior to Zorin being installed.

On about 1 out of 3 or 4 attempts to shut the laptop down, it hangs and won't completely shut down. I have to press the power button to complete the shutdown process. Every time that happens, the shortcuts and folders on my desktop get scrambled. The desktop scrambling also happens on about 1 of 5 reboots. Like I said, it's not a huge problem, but I'd like to find the culprit. I'm leaning towards not having something in the BIOS set correctly.

Anybody have any ideas?
