[SOLVED] Kernel 3.16

[SOLVED] Kernel 3.16

Postby goldfish173 » Fri Feb 20, 2015 11:47 pm

Any plans to integrate ubuntu 14.04.2 into Zorin OS9 including the new 3.16 kernel? http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/02/ubun ... -16-kernel. But it seems from the OMG article that both upgrade and kernel are currently unstable. But when stable perhaps?

Hi,

depending on how you have your software sources set, you can find the 3.16 kernel listed in Synaptic and do a manual install!.

Synaptic Package Manager _005.jpg

I don't have it installed myself but its there if you want it. See software sources settings here:

Thx Wolfman. Ending your posts with the phrase "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK" always gives me the willies! As i said the comments on the OMG! UBUNTU! article suggested that the kernel is as yet unstable so maybe i shouldn't take the risk. I have tried to force an update but there is nothing on my system to update so indeed it would be at my own risk. Gulp!

Hi,

I don't use unstable software as it is exactly what it says: "Unstable", if you wait, it will filter through eventually!. :D

You can check out the release notes here:

I guess the kernel will filter through eventually. I just have to be patient.

Just to let you know, I installed it to see if it would do any damage and it seemed to run fine, when I tried to do an update check, my software sources list was showing duplicates and 404 error messages, I ran the clear duplicate files command "sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists/* && sudo apt-get update" but it didn't clear the problem so I un-installed it again!.

BE AWARE, THE FOLLOWING COMMAND IS NOT FOR UBUNTU 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) BUT FOR 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn). (ZORIN OS 9 IS BASED ON UBUNTU 14.04!.) And that's where my troubles started officer!. :D

If you want to take the chance, use the following command but like I said above, it may well cause problems for your system:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get linux-generic-lts-utopic

This is how I should have done it and I advise you to do the same!:

Another question, is it really that important to have a higher kernel if your rig is running anyway?. :D

I don't bother myself, like Swarf said, if it ain't broke don't fix it! (or something like that!). :D

Something in me wants to have all the most up to date stuff running on my rig. It was always the case when i was running Windoze; it's something which i'm gradually learning with Linux that i can do without.
