[SOLVED] Wireless does not work in Zorin 12.4 Core

Mina

Hey,

I'm new to Zorin and can't get the Wireless working after Installation. I tried a couple of things I found online but weren't able to resolve the problem.
Would be great if someone here could give me some advise on how to get it working!

I installed Zorin 12.4 OS Core on a new Laptop (HP 14-ck0103ng) on a second partition parallel to Windows 10 home (preinstalled).
sudo parted --list

(Why are there so many partitions listet? :? )

I downloaded the windows-driver for the wireless device and tried to install it via the wifi driver symbol in Zorin. When I open and install the inf-File, I get the following error: modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'ndiswrapper': Required key not available
I have many inf-Files to choose from but all give the same error message.

In windows, wifi connection works fine. Also LAN is no problem in Zorin.

Would be thankful for some advice and instructions!

Regards,
Mina

Hi, thank you for your answer!

I get the details of my wireless but when I run permission command in step 3 [sudo chmod 755 /etc/pm/config.d/] i have the following:

chmod: Zugriff auf '/etc/pm/config.d/' nicht möglich: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

which roughly translate into: chmod: access on '/etc/pm/config.d/' not possible: File or directory not found

OK, what is interesting is that is only showing the ethernet device and not the wireless device as expected.

Please post back the results of:

:D

So I followed the guide steps 1 to 4 successfully I think.
In step 5, command 1 to load new driver is fine, but running command 2
[sudo modprobe rtl8723de] i have the following output:
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'rtl8723de': Required key not available

Should I continue with step 6?

As it did not seem to work, I continued with step 6

the other 2 commands seemed to run without problem:
sudo sed -i '/blacklist bcma/ d' /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
sudo sed -i '/blacklist brcmsmac/ d' /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

I will restart and see if anything has changed.

Done some more delving for you - if you have kernel 4.15 installed, follow the terminal commands underneath rtl8723de on this page:

Thanks a lot!!!

I do have kernel 4.15 installed.
I followed the 'install' section and everything went fine including the reboot.

In the 'uninstall' section, when I run the first command, I have the following error message:

sudo rmmod -f 8723de

rmmod: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod-module.c:793 kmod_module_remove_module() could not remove '8723de': No such file or directory
rmmod: ERROR: could not remove module 8723de: No such file or directory

Nevertheless, I followed the other code which went thru fine and rebooted.

It seems nothings has changed and wireless is still not working.

under Terminal (CTRL+t)
Code:
sudo apt-get purge ndiswrapper*

Code:
sudo modprobe rtl8723de

reboot

with HP found for your tryout

I followed this and installed linux kernel headers for my distribution and followed steps 1 and 2:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install git dkms
cd Downloads
git clone -b extended --single-branch https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
unofficial
d rtlwifi_new

:~/Downloads/rtlwifi_new$ make
:~/Downloads/rtlwifi_new$ sudo make install

sudo make install gave this:

make -C /lib/modules/4.15.0-36-generic/build M=/home/quill/Downloads/rtlwifi_new modules
make[1]: Verzeichnis „/usr/src/linux-headers-4.15.0-36-generic“ wird betreten
Makefile:975: "Cannot use CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION=y, please install libelf-dev, libelf-devel or elfutils-libelf-devel"
Building modules, stage 2.
MODPOST 19 modules
make[1]: Verzeichnis „/usr/src/linux-headers-4.15.0-36-generic“ wird verlassen
Making backups
Install rtlwifi SUCCESS

After reboot, I can see no change. No wifi signal popping up or to be seen in the network manager.

To be honest, I am not too sure what I'm doing in the terminal :? I installed libelf-dev and ran the two last commands [sudo make, sudo make install] again

~/rtlwifi_new$ sudo make install

Verzeichnis „/usr/src/linux-headers-4.15.0-36-generic“ wird betreten
Building modules, stage 2.
MODPOST 19 modules

Hi

The error happens with a UEFI system and enable Secure Boot. Have you already disabled Secure Boot in UEFI (BIOS) settings? In most cases you can get into UEFI settings using grub menu. Press ESC button on booting, get into grub menu and select System Setup. Secure Boot option should be in "Security" or "Boot" section of the UEFI.

keep us advised please

Okay :D

I tried it before to turn off secure boot but it would not change anything with the wifi. Also when I turn on the notebook, without secure boot, it would then boot windows 10 directly without letting me choose between the OS.

Now I tried it again and -tadaaa- wifi is working! So thanks for making me try it again!

Now like before, when I turn on the notebook it boots Windows 10 directly without giving me the opportunity to choose between Zorin and Windows. Any idea how I could change that?
